VOTE for Environmental Champions on Tuesday, June 20!

2023 Kansas City, MO elections

The City of Kansas City, Missouri will hold an election on June 20. The Sierra Club Missouri Chapter, led by our volunteers in the Thomas Hart Benton Group, is mobilizing to ensure Kansas City’s incredible progress on sustainability, climate action, and environmental justice continues.

Sierra Club members and activists support candidates seeking elected office in all levels of government who will move our nation swiftly along a path to 100% clean energy by reducing greenhouse gas pollution and advancing clean energy technologies in ways that advance equity and justice. Led by our volunteers, we win victories for our communities and planet, led by our base of over 20,000 members and supporters in Missouri and nearly 4 million nationwide. We need to continue working with friends and neighbors to build a future where all can thrive. Join Kansas Citians in getting out the vote to support champions who will put our health, well-being, and the environment first. Below you will find a list of champions Sierra Club has endorsed and information on how you can help.

Sierra Club Supports the Following Candidates for City Council:

At-Large (voted for by all KC residents)**

District 2

Jenay Manley (website)

Why She’s a Champion

Jenay Manley has been organizing with residents and advocating for ground-breaking policies that benefit KC for years. We are thrilled to see such a talented, successful, and dedicated public servant is running to serve the Northland and entire City. She will be KC’s first Black councilperson to represent the Northland, and we are honored to fight for people and the planet alongside her.

District 4

Justin Short (website)

Why He’s a Champion

Since being the first candidate to launch their campaign, Justin Short has tirelessly engaged with residents across the city, wasting no time to weigh in constructively on tough issues KC faces and bringing diverse stakeholders together to find alignment so they can work together. This is a rare and admirable quality for any local leader, and the city will be better for having such an honest, communicative, and diligent advocate for KC as a councilman.

District 5

Michael Kelly (website)

Why He’s a Champion

Michael Kelley has been serving Kansas City for years and has helped the city achieve some of its most important policies, especially in public safety, human health, and the environment. He is well-versed in city policy and policy-making, and will make a positive impact starting day 1 as a councilman. As an officer on numerous city commissions and committees, he has lifted the profile of key health and environmental issues while increasing opportunities for public engagement to ensure the people’s needs are centered in policies impacting them.

District 6

Andrea Bough (website)

Why She’s a Champion

A leader for all Kansas Citians, Councilmember Bough has worked with everyone to achieve major victories that will benefit KC for years to come. Most recently, she led the effort to update the city’s outdated energy code, immensely benefiting public health and giving KC the opportunity to bring millions of federal dollars to invest in our communities. We are honored to have been an ally and look forward to continuing to work together during her second term.

Mayor

Quinton Lucas (website)

Why He’s a Champion

It’s not easy being a mayor, and facing a global pandemic, rising racial injustice nationwide, an economic downturn, and worsening climate crisis, the last term has seen some of the most challenging years in KC’s history! Mayor Q has helped us weather the storm while leading and supporting initiatives to victory that will benefit all. From implementing free transit for all, implementing the city’s roadmap to climate justice in KC’s new Climate Protection & Resiliency Plan, and increasing confidence and engagement in city governance, Quinton Lucas will continue to honor Kansas City and the state of Missouri as a dedicated public servant. We know he doesn’t need it to win, but we proudly endorse Mayor Q and thank him for his continued service.

In-District (voted for by residents from that district only)**

District 3

Melissa Robinson (website)

Why She’s a Champion

Thanks to Melissa Robinson, Kansas City government has worked more transparently, effectively, and efficiently due to her leading efforts to center community voices in policy-making. Having strong public engagement in city decisions is a key pillar of democracy, and Councilmember Robinson has raised the bar in KC, building confidence in city operations and increasing public discussion and collaboration, all while advancing important legislation from supporting affordable housing to sponsoring the adoption of Kansas City’s Climate Protection & Resiliency Plan. In her next term, Councilwoman Robinson will continue to be an incredible advocate for all in the Third District, and we look forward to continuing to support her stellar work for KC.

District 4

Eric Bunch (website)

Why He’s a Champion

Eric Bunch has been an environmental champion long before he was elected to the City Council, and we continue to support his work with Kansas Citians, for our city, and proudly endorse his campaign for reelection. From increasing safety for pedestrians, connecting our city, and championing important climate protection and health legislation that is a model for the region, Councilman Bunch has always centered the needs of the people in District 4 while helping guide all of KC on a path to greater resilience and prosperity for all. We look forward to more great work next term!

District 6

Johnathan Duncan (website)

Why He’s a Champion

Like his long-time colleague outside city hall, Jenay Manley, Jonathan Duncan is a champion for ALL Kansas Citians, and we look forward to having such a talented public servant representing the Sixth District as its Councilman. In addition to his successful career in service, Jonathan Duncan has been a dedicated community organizer who has helped his neighbors advocate for themselves, empowering residents and building a more connected, driven community across the city that takes care of all. With Johnathan Duncan in office, all will be better off having a councilmember who will always, always work with them and fight for them. We proudly endorse him and thank him for his years of service, both as a community leader and KC’s next Councilman for District 6.
