Thomas Hart Benton Group of the Sierra Club
The Sierra Club is the most enduring and influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. We amplify the power of our millions of members and supporters.
Our mission is:
- To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places and endangered species of the earth;
- To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources;
- To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.
The Kansas City, Missouri local group of the Sierra Club is named the Thomas Hart Benton Group. We are a part of the Missouri Chapter.
On the Kansas side of the KC metro area, the local group is named the Kanza group. The Kanza Group is a part of the Kansas Chapter.
Since our mission includes both protecting and enjoying the natural environment, we participate in outdoor activities such as hikes and backpacks, as well as meetings and actions centered around political campaigns, education, environmental justice, climate change awareness, and many other important causes. We often partner with other local organizations for meetings, learning and combining our efforts.
Our outings, including virtual ones such as book club and trip reports, can be found on our Outings Meetup and our general membership meetings as well as events in partnership with other groups can be found on our Heartland Sierra Club Friends Meetup.

You can join our group and become a member or renew your membership at the National Sierra Club. If you are a new member, you will be assigned to the Group or your choosing or based on your address.
