Chapter Chair's Column

by Andy Sawyer - On May 2, 2024, President Biden used his authority under the Antiquities Act of 1906 to expand the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument to include the Molok Luyuk, an area along the ridge that forms the boundary between Colusa County, in the Sierra Club Mother Lode Chapter, and Lake County, in the Redwood Chapter. The expansion comes thanks to many years of hard work by volunteers in both chapters, including work to obtain support from local elected officials, and to the work of Indian Tribes.

It's a day to celebrate! On May 2nd, President Biden expanded the Berryessa Snow Mountain and San Gabriel Mountains National Monuments in California, protecting nearly 120,000 acres of ecologically and culturally significant landscapes, critical water sources, and places integral for access to nature. These proclamations provide opportunities for co-stewardship with Tribal Nations, including the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation who have led the effort to include the sacred Molok Luyuk landscape within Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument in northern California. Molok Luyuk, meaning “Condor Ridge” in the Patwin language, was officially renamed from “Walker Ridge.” The Administration also announced crucial investments, alongside state and private partners, to improve outdoor recreation infrastructure, restore and protect resources, and increase staffing to improve the visitor experience at the popular San Gabriel Mountains National Monument in the Los Angeles region.

These victories were achieved in huge part through years of organizing and advocacy by Sierra Club volunteers, chapters (particularly the Angeles, Redwood, and Mother Lode chapters), and staff.

Washoe Colony Earth Day

Sierra Club Tahoe Area Group (TAG) participated in a number of events in April and May including the Washoe Colony Earth Day on May 4 in Carson City, NV. The table was hosted by TAG volunteers Tobi Tyler, John Klimaszewskim, and Lynne Paulson.

We asked some attendees to participate in guessing how long it took for various single use plastic items to deteriorate. We also asked some attendees to guess what animal the horns came from. We loved that many children guessed they were from reindeer. Others guessed that they were from deer. It turns out that the horns were naturally shed by an elk. We were surprised that many of the adults guessed this correctly but perhaps it is not surprising since many participants were Indigenous people who are closely connected to nature and the environment.

The event was hosted by the Washoe Tribe Environmental Protection Department. It was a wonderful opportunity to publicize the work of the Sierra Club, as well as engage with the community and other participating conservation organizations.
