Activities

The following are some activities in the Philly area that we do with groups and you can also do yourself.  If you have any questions, let us know.

Orienteering - Permanent Practice Course

The Philly ICO co-sponsored with the Delaware Valley Orienteering Association to construct a permanent orienteering course at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education (SCEE), 304 Port Royal Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19128.

Orienteering is an outdoor sport where the participants (individuals or small groups) use a compass and map to find controls located in the woods.  The course at SCEE is a beginner course that is permanently available.  You can find the map that you can download and more details below and at this site, under Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education.

Hiking

Philly ICO has led hikes in numerous parks in the city including Fairmount Park, Wissahickon Valley Park, and FDR Park.  We also have led hikes in nearby parks such as Ridley Creek State Park and Valley Forge National Park. Hikes vary in distance and terrain and can be customized to the needs of your group.  They can be experiential (just enjoying the outdoors), or can be interwoven with other activities including scavenger hunts, sensory awareness, or leadership/team building games.

Nature Centers

The Philly area has a number of excellent nature centers that offer both environmental enrichment and hiking opportunities.  Examples include The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and Wissahickon Nature Center, both within the city.
