Nicole Miller Will Bring New Leadership On Protecting Pennsylvania's Environment!

The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Nicole Miller, Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania House District 87, in the General Election on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020.

Nicole is running for office to represent average people, who are facing real issues that threaten the health and safety of their families. She is a newcomer to the campaign trail but a veteran of activist interventions. Because Nicole lost her 19-year-old son to mental health issues, she has seen up close how broken our mental health care system is. She vows to work to find help for families struggling with mental health.

Nicole decided to seek office because she saw special needs students being ignored – a result of a dearth of resources – and a general laissez-faire attitude toward the degradation of the local air and waterways by her opponent. She also sees the need for an aggressive approach on social justice inequities. Her primary environmental goals in office are cleaning up air and water, dealing with stormwater run-off, and regulating the petrochemical holding plants in her district. She lives in Hamden Township with her husband and three children.

Nicole serves on her local School Board. In 2019, she spearheaded the effort to get the School Board and the township supervisors to pass resolutions to support Restore PA, Governor Wolf's proposal to fund a variety of infrastructure and environmental projects. She also favors electric school busses to reduce diesel fuel exhaust, a major local polluter.

Candidate Nicole Miller

Nicole is challenging three-term Republican incumbent Greg Rothman, who has voted to eliminate Pennsylvania’s largest anti-poverty program and supported measures that would take money away from underfunded school districts and allocate scarce public funds to wealthier districts. Rothman has a lifetime environmental scorecard rating of three percent. Nicole feels that the district is trending away from its conservative roots and toward a more progressive outlook.

We strongly encourage all Sierra Club members, their friends, neighbors and relatives to support Nicole Miller so that we can finally turn around the Pennsylvania General Assembly from an anti-environmental body to a deliberative body that values and protects the air, water, and natural places of the Commonwealth. Only by electing candidates like Nicole can we reach our goal.
