Tahquitz Group

Welcome to the Tahquitz Group!

Stretching from the San Gorgonio Pass to the Colorado River -- and including the northern half of the Salton Sea as well as Joshua Tree National Park and the entire Morongo Basin -- the Tahquitz Group area is rich with glorious natural assets!  For over five decades our activists have been working to protect them. We invite you to play a role in this effort, to whatever degree you wish—be it clicking on an action alert to a local elected official, making a phone call, attending a meeting (virtually these days), or simply informing your family and friends about a critical conservation issue.

Currently one of our prime ongoing efforts is ensuring the Salton Sea is preserved as a crucial stopover for millions of migratory birds, and working with local social justice groups to remediate its threat to regional air quality. Another recent campaign was to stop "Paradise Valley," which would have been a new sprawl city right next to Joshua Tree National Park Wilderness.  Although stopped for now, we stand ready to fight against Paradise Valley if it is proposed again. In between, we work on issues like renewable energy projects (not all projects are appropriate) and trying to get a fence built in La Quinta to protect bighorn sheep from poisoning and drowning.

Historically, beginning with a huge dam in Tahquitz Canyon, our activists have spearheaded many campaigns to preserve special places and the creatures that inhabit them, including securing endangered listing for bighorn sheep, protecting Joshua Tree National Park, creating the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, designating nearby Wilderness areas, and implementing the Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan.

The Coachella Valley has many educational programs available throughout the year, and for that reason our Group doesn't concentrate on evening programs — but we're offering a range of outings, including occasional trips to introduce the public to some special places that need saving! Please scroll down for Outings.

Please contact us at tahquitz@sangorgonio.sierraclub.org for more info on our current conservation campaigns or to take a more active part in preserving our wonderful area for future generations.
