Environmental Violation-Photo

Every citizen can help identify local environmental problems by knowing what to look for and how to report them.
The City of Houston was the first city in the nation to create and publish a public Environmental Violation Handbook. This handbook captures the 30 most common environmental violations, from illegal dumping into storm drains, and sewer overflow, to industrial waste, chemical spills, and smoking vehicles.

Toad-Photo

The Houston toad was discovered in the late 1940's but wasn’t named until 1953. John Wottring, an amateur herpetologist, heard an unfamiliar, high-pitched trill-sounding nighttime call in South Houston and it was discovered that the toad belonged to an undescribed species and it was then named the Houston toad.

Tree Planting-Photo

The long delayed Big Thicket National Preserve (BTNP) Longleaf Pine tree planting event, re-scheduled due to the federal government shutdown, finally occurred on February 8th, in the Turkey Creek Unit next to the visitor center and headquarters offices. The National Park Service (NPS) and National Parks and Conservation Association deserve a big thank you for persisting and getting the job done.

Katy Prairie-Photo

Since moving to Humble, Texas, my drives to the outings that I lead are much longer. I left my house at 7 am on Saturday morning (February 16th) to drive to the Indian Grass Prairie Preserve that the Katy Prairie Conservancy owns in Waller County. I needed to get there by 9 am to meet my Sierra Club volunteer crew.

I am retired and you would think that I have plenty of "free time". However, looks are deceiving. Between all the volunteer work I do for the Houston Group and Lone Star Chapter Sierra Club, life with my lovely fiancée, work around the house, and the curves that life throws at me, I had been unable to get outdoors like I did last year.
