Spotlight: Alex Paul

Welcome, tell us a little about yourself

My name is Alex Paul. I am currently a student at University of Houston – Clear Lake pursuing a master’s in environmental science. I am currently working on my thesis which focuses on micro-plastic pollution in Cypress Creek. After I graduate, I plan to go to law school and pursue a JD in Environmental Law. I hope to one day work on policies that can impact the planet.

Describe the first time you felt a strong affinity for nature?

The first time I felt a strong affinity for nature was probably at a very young age. I grew up in an area that instead of having neighbors behind my fence, I had a forest. With that forest came a multitude of encounters with many forest creatures that sparked my enthusiasm for nature and wildlife. Not only did I have the pleasure of encountering many animals that are not seen as often, but I had the opportunity to learn about them, play with them, and in some cases raise them. On some occasions my family would find abandoned baby birds or baby squirrels that had fallen off their tree. I recall nursing them until the mother finally took them back. My passion for nature was also influenced by Steve Irwin and watching The Crocodile Hunter on TV and trying to be like him, when I was younger. I would catch snakes and lizards the way he did.

What Is your favorite Hiking or Camping trails?

As I got older, hiking various trails around the United States have become a passion and an escape for me. My favorite hiking spot in Texas is in Dinosaur Valley State Park near Dallas. It features some views of from the tops of hills, camping areas, a shallow river and forest lands. What made the hike so special to me was beneath the clear old water there were dinosaur steps perfectly preserved. I got to step in their footsteps which was very exciting.

What motivated you to become a Sierra Club member?

What motivated me to join the Sierra Club is all the great work the organization has done. I wanted to get involved, to do my part in my community and work with other great leaders that are all on the same mission that I am and, I am excited to be a part of this organization.

What environmental message do you have for young people?

The message I have for young people is that you can’t solve everything at once, but small steps matter. Start by doing your part and recycling, use reusable bags when shopping, use ecofriendly products. I’ve noticed that the more I do it in front of others, the more others want to do their part. It may be a slow process, but small steps are contagious and always lead by example.
