'Week Without Driving', National Event, Sept. 29 - Oct. 5

The Sierra Club has long advocated for reducing auto dependency, and increasing the travel options that benefit human health, better preserve our air, water, and environment, and promote greater quality of life. To that end the Sierra Club has joined a coalition of groups to help promote a 'Week Without Driving', to encourage citizens to explore their travel options, reduce auto dependency, and gain a better understanding of how travel modes impact our environment and quality of life. Check out the partner links below for further details and background.

"Sierra Club works to reduce our car dependence by advocating for reliable public transit, safe infrastructure for walking and biking, and more housing choices near where people work, learn, and play."

"Safer Streets for Everyone: Pedestrians and our most vulnerable communities are disproportionately paying the price for a transportation system that prioritizes cars at every turn. To reverse this trend, we’re advocating for policies that prioritize safety and mobility for people walking, biking, and using transit or other forms of active transportation."

"If you can drive or afford a car, you may not understand what it’s like to rely on walking, rolling, transit and asking for rides. But for nearly a third of people living in the United States – people with disabilities, young people, seniors and people who can’t afford cars or gas – this is our every day."

"We created the Week Without Driving experience so that those who have the option to drive can learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face and work with nondrivers to create more accessible communities for all."

"What if getting around didn’t require driving a car? Join us for one week to rethink how our communities prioritize cars—and explore how more accessible transportation can connect people, strengthen communities, and improve daily life for everyone."

"Former Sierra Club President Ramón Cruz is urging Americans to give up driving for seven days — and support policies to make it optional for everyone."
