Black and Latinx communities in Milwaukee are more likely to have a higher energy burden than white communities. Submit a comment to the Public Service Commission to decrease racial disparities in energy burden.
Many Black, Hispanic and Latinx people and other marginalized communities in Milwaukee who have historically suffered from redlining and other racial discrimination may have their power shut off if you don’t speak up. Tell your elected officials and We Energies that this is not the sort of community you want Milwaukee to be, and to ensure that equity and justice for all Milwaukee residents is paramount.
Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy, our energy efficiency program, could provide resources to reduce energy use or install clean energy measures, but being a renter who needs landlord approval or being unable to access funds or the application form create barriers that prevent people from receiving the program’s benefits.
This year, the PSC is reevaluating Focus on Energy in a process they call the Quadrennial Review, a process that only happens every four years. The PSC needs to hear from you what steps can be taken to decrease racial disparities in energy burden, decrease barriers for low income customers to access Focus on Energy programs, and meet much-needed carbon reduction goals.
