Sierra Club Georgia Chapter Joins Voices Calling For Immediate Passage Of Anti-Hate Crimes Legislation

SIERRA CLUB GEORGIA CHAPTER JOINS VOICES CALLING FOR IMMEDIATE PASSAGE OF ANTI-HATE CRIMES LEGISLATION

ATLANTA — The Sierra Club Georgia Chapter has added its name to a growing list of organizations who support immediate passage of anti-Hate Crime legislation, HB 426, in the Georgia Legislature. Georgia is one of only five states in the U.S. that does not have hate crimes legislation providing enhanced penalties for crimes committed against someone for who they are. Ahmaud Arbery’s murder in Brunswick underscores the need for this law in Georgia, and we join Ahmaud Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, in calling for the Georgia Legislature to pass this law immediately.

“Building a sustainable future requires that we work for justice for all now. We should begin with this law against hate, violence, and discrimination,” said Jeff Schoenberg, chair of the Sierra Club Georgia Chapter’s Executive Committee.

A list of other non-profits who have expressed their commitment to end hate in Georgia can be found here. To see a full list of businesses who have expressed their support for HB 426, click here.
