Local Groups

The Bay Chapter is divided geographically into eight local groups within our four counties. Each group is led by volunteer members. To find out which group you belong to, see the map of local group areas at the bottom of this page.

To get involved with any of these groups or learn more about local issues, contact the leaders listed on our Chapter Leadership Roster. For current information about coming group activities and meetings, see the Chapter calendar. Find bylaws, standing rules, and other informational materials on our Leader Resources page.

Delta Group

The Delta Regional Group represents the approximately 400 Sierra Club members living in eastern Contra Costa County from Bay Point to Discovery Bay. It offers regular outdoor activities, and our members work on many conservation issues.

The ExCom meets at 5:00 PM on the second Friday of the month at various locations. Contact leaders for more information about meetings and how to get involved at delta@sfbaysc.org.

Marin Group

The Sierra Club Marin Group represents the approximately 5,400 Club members who live in Marin County. Group activities include:

  • Hikes and outings to visit and learn about Marin's natural beauty and resources — to Point Reyes National Seashore, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Mount Tamalpais, China Camp State Park, Tomales Bay, San Pablo Bay, and more.
  • Studying and speaking out on issues that affect Marin's environment: development proposals, water supply, transportation, agriculture, parks, recreation, rails, wildlife protection, toxics, and environmental justice. We lobby city, county, and other officials on these issues.

The Executive Committee of the Marin Group consists of up to 11 elected representatives. The Group Executive Committee meets on the second Wednesday of every month, at 7 PM. The Group Conservation Committee meets beforehand, at 6 PM. Members are encouraged to participate, and to bring issues to the attention of the committees. Standing committees include Conservation, Political, and Outings.

The Executive Committee always welcomes people who want to be more actively involved. Please contact us for meeting information.

For more information, visit the Marin Group website.

Mount Diablo Group

The membership of the Mount Diablo Group is drawn from central Contra Costa County, from Martinez to San Ramon to Lamorinda. Activities of the group include conservation, outings, and bimonthly programs.

The Conservation Committee studies and speaks out on the environmental concerns of the county. We invite interested residents to participate.

Outings are an excellent means of meeting other people with similar interests in our beautiful outdoor environment. Our outings include a variety of day hikes and other activities that appeal to members with a wide range of interests and abilities.

Our Executive Committee meets the first Monday of the month at 6:00 p.m. Members and guests are always invited. Please contact us for meeting information.

Northern Alameda County Group

The Northern Alameda County (NAC) Group considers urban environmental and environmental justice issues in the cities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Piedmont, and San Leandro. These issues can include environmental justice, air quality, the tree canopy, public trust lands, creeks, the San Francisco Bay and water, pollution and toxics, parks and open space, bird and wildlife habitat, green buildings and infrastructure, zero waste, plastics, clean and renewable energy, electrification, housing affordability and neighborhood stabilization, green and public transit, and natural-resource protection.

NAC's nine-member Executive Committee meets at 7:30 PM on the fourth Monday of every month, considering conservation actions, political endorsements, and recommendations to higher-level Club entities.

Beforehand, at 6:30 PM, the Conservation Committee meets to discuss environmental issues of concern leading to official letters, suggestions for policy and positions, and meeting with local elected officials and staff. All are welcome! Contact group leaders with any questions or issues.

San Francisco Group

Join the other 6,800 members of the San Francisco Group in outings, social events, and conservation activities. San Francisco conservation priorities include:

  • Preservation of city parkland
  • Preservation and construction of affordable housing
  • Citywide expansion of CleanPowerSF
  • Reduction and clean-up of toxics
  • Maintaining and improving mass transit
  • Acquisition and protection of open space
  • Recycling and resource conservation
  • Sustainable job development
  • Wetlands restoration and protection
  • Water conservation, treatment, and planning
  • Clean air policies as they relate to pollution and global warming

Your help is needed to formulate and implement Sierra Club policy on these and other issues.

The SF Group meets monthly on the third Tuesday of each month, beginning with the Conservation Committee (start time varies, but usually begins at 7 p.m.) and followed by the Executive Committee. For information on our Conservation agenda, please contact Conservation Committee chair Peter Belden at sfconservation@sfbaysc.org or SF Group chair Charles Whitfield at sfgroup@sfbaysc.org.

The San Francisco Group's Transportation Committee meets on the first Monday of each month. They're working to reverse the climate crisis and improve equity by supporting Transit First. If you'd like to work on these issues, contact the committee at sftransportation@sfbaysc.org.

The San Francisco Group's Housing Committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month. Contact chair Dan Federman at sfhousing@sfbaysc.org.

Southern Alameda County Group

The Southern Alameda County Group includes members in Hayward, Union City, Newark, and Fremont, as well as unincorporated Ashland, Cherryland, Castro Valley, Fairview, and San Lorenzo.

The Group Executive Committee meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. on Zoom. Contact group leaders for details.

The ExCom weighs and takes positions on environmental issues facing our communities, including development proposals, water resources, agriculture, preservation of open space, land use, trails, air quality, creeks, conservation, and political endorsements.

You can contact group leaders with any questions or issues.

Tri-Valley Group

The Tri-Valley Group includes three incorporated cities, Dublin, Livermore, and Pleasanton, plus Sunol and a large amount of unincorporated land.

The Tri-Valley Group works to protect the Urban Growth Boundary and lobbies for open space.

Contact group leaders with any questions or issues.

West Contra Costa County Group

The West Contra Costa County Group covers the bayside communities from El Cerrito and Kensington, through Richmond and Hercules to Crockett. Our area includes green hills, regional parks, bustling communities, peaceful neighborhoods, and precious bay shore ecosystems. We work on topics such as:

  • Refinery safety and emissions
  • Land use — protection of open space and ecosystems on the hillsides and the bayshore. Major focus in the past few years has been on Richmond’s northern and southeastern shorelines.

Recent or ongoing issues include:

  • Proposals for major modifications of the Chevron Richmond and Phillips 66 Rodeo refineries
  • Crude by rail through the East Bay
  • Land use, transportation, and community development in and around the UC Berkeley field station on Richmond’s south shore

We welcome your participation! Come to our Executive Committee meetings and find out what we’re up to and how you can jump in. We meet on the first Saturday of the month at 9 a.m. online. Contact group leaders to confirm meeting dates. We hope to see you!
