Spring outings head to Milwaukee River and Falk Park

Exploring a habitat restoration project on Milwaukee River Greenway

Saturday, April 27, 9 to 11:30 a.m.
Meet at Turtle Park, 2134 N. Riverboat Road, Milwaukee

We will collaborate again with Catie Petralia of the River Revitalization Foundation on an outing along the Milwaukee River Greenway on April 27. We will hike up to the Locust St. Bridge and then return via the east side of the river, about 2.5 miles. Rating: moderate.

Besides looking at signs of spring and learning about historic sites on this section of the Greenway, we will explore the Area of Concern (AOC) issues that called for the reclamation of land along this section of the river.

Natalie Dutack, who is heading Milwaukee County's AOC projects, will lead a discussion about this reclamation effort.

Exploring Falk Park, a ‘hidden gem’

Friday, May 17, 3- 5 p.m.
Falk Park, 2013 W. Rawson Ave., Oak Creek

Jacob Sanchez, trails coordinator for Milwaukee County Parks, will join us for a hike May 17 at Falk Park. We’ll learn why he suggested Falk Park as we hike the roughly 2-mile trail. Rating: easy.

The All Trails app describes Falk as a “hidden gem,” highlighting birds, spring wildflowers and ephemeral streams. Protecting these seasonal streams is essential to safeguarding water resources, preserving wildlife habitats, and ensuring the overall forest health.

Hikers might meet afterward at an ephemeral beer garden in a county park TBD.
