Arkansas Chapter: About US

Mission

...to explore, enjoy and protect the planet; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment, and to use all lawful means to carry out those objectives.

Founded in 1892, the Sierra Club is one of the nation's oldest and largest grassroots environmental organizations. Initially, the Club's focus was on preservation of wilderness areas such as Yosemite Valley. Over the years, the Club expanded to over a-million members with chapters in every state. In recent years, the Club's efforts have broadened to engage in protection of the environment: climate change, clean energy, clean air, clean water. The Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.

The Arkansas Chapter - with around 2750 members - was established in 1982 to help protect the wilderness areas of Arkansas. (The Wilderness Act of 1984 created several Wilderness Areas in Arkansas.) More recently, the Chapter's focus has been on Clean Energy (including the Beyond Coal Campaign) and Clean Water (e.g., Lake Maumelle Watershed and the Pegasus Pipeline rupture in Mayflower AR).
