Birdwatching - Hot Springs

2/22/26 - Today's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette page 1E (Style Section) has information on birdwatching in the Hot Springs area.

Pinnacle Mountain SP Changes

2/23/26 - A prescribed burn around Pinnacle Mountain occurred mid January. Smoke from the fire appeared as a wide cloud layer across northern Faulkner County. Until the leaves start coming out, the area now appears more open along both the Base Trail and the West Summit Trail. Parts of the Owl Pass trail (mentioned below) west of the railroad track are now visible from the Base Trail.

4/15/26 -  At the far east end of the West Summit Parking Lot (just past the boat launch area), the park has recently (end of 2025) paved the easy 1 mile Owl Pass trail from this area to the Arkansas Arboretum. The trail's location is first near the Little Maumelle River, then under and along the railroad track. The paved trail is wide enough to handle both hikers and bikers.

4/13/25 - If you have not been to the West Summit Parking Lot lately, expect to see some changes the next time you go. The former turn-off from Hwy 300 to the West Summit Parking Lot is now permanently closed. You must now drive several hundred yards further north on Hwy 300 and turn right toward the new Visitor's Center, then immediately turn right again on a curving road down to a traffic circle that is just east of the previous Hwy 300 intersection. Parking is now possible on BOTH sides of the driveway leading to the restrooms and main parking lot. I recommend stopping at the new Visitor's Center to get a free trail map. The park appears to now have twice as many hiking and biking trails as ten years ago.

Burns Park (NLR)

2/23/26 - Burns Park may have lost 10,000 trees during the tornado several years age. Some of the park trails were destroyed by the tornado; other trails by trucks removing dead trees; still others were overgrown during the period the park was closed to the public. Since then, trails have been cleared, re-routed, or re-built. Most trails are now in good condition although some of the southern parts of the Green Trail may be damp or muddy. There are plans to cover those wet areas with gravel in the coming months.

National Park Reservations

At least one National Park (Yosemite) now requires reservations to drive into the park on certain days. For more info, go to https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/permitsandreservations.htm

Special Topic: Texas Coal Plants An Issue, Sierra Club Says

By Doug Thompson - NW News - December 30, 2014

Two coal-fired power plants in Texas stand as the most immediate threat to air quality in Northwest Arkansas, said the director of the Sierra Club in Arkansas.

The plants are among seven at issue in a Jan. 15 public hearing in Oklahoma City. The federal Environmental Protection Agency called the hearing after rejecting parts of Texas' plan to gradually reduce the amount of haze-causing sulfur dioxide from the plants.

Glen Hooks, this state's Sierra Club director, said his group will argue at the hearing the sulfur dioxide contributes to haze as far north as Benton and Washington counties and over the federally protected headwaters of the Buffalo National River. ... MORE     [TOP]
