TappanZee Bridge to Rockland Lake Biking Outing

When: Saturday, May 4, 2024, 9:00 AM - 2 PM (approximately) (Raindate Sunday May 5)

Where: 
Westchester Landing, Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge, 333 S Broadway, Tarrytown, NY 10591 @ 9am
Rockland Landing, Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge, 1200 Rte 9W, Nyack, NY 10960 @ 9:30am

Join us on a fun cycle across the TappanZee bridge, up through the streets of Nyack to Nyack Beach State Park and along the River Trail to the Rockland Lake turn off. The River Front trail is packed dirt/gravel and might not be suitable for some road bikes. Round Trip is 16 Miles.

Rockland Residents can meet us at the Rockland Landing at 9:30am (it might take us longer to get started an cross the bridge so you might have to wait a little.)

On the return leg we will stop at the Runcible Spoon, a cyclist friendly bakery in Nyack to get lunch. This is optional.

Transport: Free Parking is available at the Westchester Landing. Closest Train Station is Tarrytown on the Hudson Line From Grand Central Terminal board the 7:50 AM towards Poughkeepsie (train #8807) Arrive at Tarrytown at 8:29 AM. It is a 10 minute bike ride from the train station to the meeting point.

Bring: Bike, Repair Kit, Water, Snacks, Appropriate Clothing. Money for lunch (optional) No pets.

Marshlands Conservancy Spring Hike

When: Saturday, June 1, 2024, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM (approximately) (Rain date, Sunday June 2 at 9:00 AM)

Where: 
 Marshlands Conservancy, 220 Boston Post Road, Rye, NY 10580. (Parking available down the long driveway on the Rye side of the John Jay Estate)

Join us on a gentle 3-mile hike to explore the great variety of terrain: forest, meadow, salt marsh and shoreline, in the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye. The Trip leader, Liam Robb O'Hagan will share some interesting details of the area natural history.

Transport: Free Parking is available at Conservancy Car Park. Closest Train Stations are Mamaroneck or Rye on the New Haven Line from Grand Central Terminal. Taxi to trail head required from station

Bring: Water, Snacks, Appropriate Clothing. No pets.

Hikes with Another Summit - Community Members Welcome!

Anyone who is interested in getting certified to lead Sierra Club hikes, please reach out to Gail Dutan at gail@move2lifeny.com.

Community members are also welcome to join hikes given by Another Summit, the Sierra Club Military Outdoors partner in our area. Another Summit Outings Leaders are trained by the Sierra Club and work primarily with veterans and first responders, but they welcome all community members to join them.

Ferncliff Forest Walk

Join our outdoor leaders, Dawn and Elena, on a peaceful nature walk through the woods of the Ferncliff Forest nature preserve in Rhinebeck.

On this 2.7-mile walk through winding forest trails, we'll have plenty of time to stop and admire our surroundings as well as some of Ferncliff Forest's key features — including the Mount Rutsen fire tower and a scenic pond.

  • WHO: Guardians and friends/family (kids welcome)

  • WHEN: Saturday, April 20 @ 10 AM ET

  • WHERE: Ferncliff Forest Parking Lot

  • DIFFICULTY: 🟦 Blue (easy)

    • Blue adventures are great for first time hikers, people short on time, or folks with small children.

  • DISTANCE: 2.7 miles

  • DURATION: 2 - 3 hours

Red Hill Fire Tower

Join outdoor leaders, Bill and Todd, for the second installment in our official Catskills Fire Tower Series.

On this hike we will climb 1,167 feet over the course of 1.75 miles to catch a fantastic view of the Catskills high peaks and Roundout Reservoir from the Red Hill observation tower.

Initiated in 2019 and organized by the DEC, the Catskills Fire Tower Challenge rewards hikers for visiting all six of the Catskill fire towers in one calendar year. Complete the challenge with us and get the commemorative patch! Check out the challenge rules here. Missed hiking a tower with us? Worry not! There will be multiple opportunities to hike each tower in 2024.

    • Green adventures are great for new hikers and folks looking to spend a few hours outside.

  • DURATION: 3 - 4 hours

New York New Jersey Trail Conference Outings

The Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group is a member of the New York New Jersey Trail Conference, which conducts group hikes and provides a wealth of information enabling you to access many trails on your own. You can also volunteer as an educational trail steward or a part of a trail-maintenance crew once the NYNJTC resumes their programs.

(POSTPONED) Glynwood Hike & Regenerative Farm Store Visit

When: Saturday, September 23, 2023, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Where: 362 Glynnwood Rd, Cold Spring, NY 10516, USA

Join us on a fun and relaxing walk in the woods and fields of Fahnestock State Park, followed by an optional trip to the Glynwood Regenerative Farmers Market! Our hike will take us through the woods and along the scenic Jordan Pond, where we can take a break to enjoy our surroundings. This hike is relatively flat with little elevation gain, but the trail has a few rough spots where you'll have to cross over creeks and boulders.
