Anyone who is interested in getting certified to lead Sierra Club hikes, please reach out to Gail Dutan at email@example.com.
Community members are also welcome to join hikes given by Another Summit, the Sierra Club Military Outdoors partner in our area. Another Summit Outings Leaders are trained by the Sierra Club and work primarily with veterans and first responders, but they welcome all community members to join them.
Here are some upcoming outings with Another Summit:
Women Guardians Outing | Feb. 3
For our February Women Guardians Outing, you can join our outdoor leaders Elena & Dawn on a rejuvenating nature walk around the scenic Little Stony Point in Cold Spring, followed by lunch in town. On this outing, we'll loop around the small peninsula and stop to explore the beaches lining its edges and admire the view of the river. We'll then make our way up to the rocky outcrop in the middle to enjoy a panoramic view of the river and its surrounding hills and mountains before heading back down for lunch. This outing is public transit accessible via the Cold Spring train station. DIFFICULTY: 🟦 Blue (easy)
Overlook Mountain Snowshoe Feb. 4
Join our outdoor leaders Bill & Todd on a snowshoeing adventure to the viewpoint on Overlook Mountain. This 4.41 mile out-and-back snowshoe hike will have you climbing 1,375ft of elevation on a wide carriage path to a breath taking cliffside view of the Hudson River Valley, and one of the Catskill fire towers, which will provide an amazing 360 degree view of the area. On the way you can also stop to explore the ruins of the Overlook Mountain House, a hotel that burned down in the late 1800s. DIFFICULTY: 🟨 Yellow (moderately strenuous)
Mindfulness Walk Feb. 17
Join our outdoor leaders Leslie and Lauren on a relaxing, meditative mindfulness walk around Pelton Pond in Fahnestock State Park, followed by a warming campfire, conversation, and hot cocoa at the Pelton Pond Pavilion. DIFFICULTY: 🟦 Blue (easy)
Zealand Falls Snowshoe Adventure Feb. 23
On this multi-day adventure taking place from the 23rd to the 25th of February, you'll get to experience the awe inspiring beauty of the White Mountains in winter. You'll spend each night in AMC lodging, making for lighter packs and a reprieve from the wet snow. With a 6 - 7 mile hike on your way to and from the Zealand Falls Hut, you'll have plenty of chances to stop and admire the scenery, including the gorgeous Zealand Falls and the scenic view from the summit of Mt. Hale. DIFFICULTY: 🟥 Red (strenuous)
Farm Lane Nature Walk Feb. 24
Join our outdoor leaders Dawn and Craig in a peaceful Saturday morning nature walk on the Franklin D. Roosevelt Farm Lane Trail, located in the Roosevelt's historic tree plantation. Once a carriage road that connected Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Springwood home with Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val-Kill cottage, the Farm Lane Trail and its surrounding foot paths have become a popular location to explore both nature and the history of one of our past Presidents.
