About Us

The Sierra Club, founded by John Muir in 1892. It's one of the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organizations in the United States. The Niagara Group is one of ten groups in the New York State Atlantic Chapter of the Sierra Club. The Niagara Group has members in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming counties in Western New York (WNY). Our members are involved in many different activities to help protect the climate, environment and the public health of WNY. This is what we do.

  • We support New York state’s 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act which requires a complete transition to renewable energy, decarbonization and electrification of transportation, heating and cooling our buildings, manufacturing and agriculture by 2040.
  • We oppose the build-out of fossil fuel (i.e. oil and gas) infrastructure and pipelines.
  • We oppose the destructive/toxic horizontal drilling practice (known as hydrofracking) and the associated chemical wastes that pollute our soil and drinking water.
  • We work in coalition with other organizations to protect and enhance our local and state watersheds, wetlands, water bodies, parks and forests.
  • We work with other organizations to stop pollution of air, water and soil, as well as to pass key legislation at the federal, state and local levels.
  • We endorse political candidates who will write and/or support legislation that aligns with our goals; We lobby our local and state elected officials for better environmental laws and policies.
  • We educate the public about important environmental issues and how they can get involved to make a difference in public policy.
