About Us

The Sierra Club Rochester Regional Group Mission/Purpose

The purpose of the Sierra Club Rochester Group is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

Some of Our Accomplishments:

* The permanent preservation of the shores of Hemlock and Conesus Lakes, the watershed supply for local drinking water. The shores of these lakes were otherwise destined to be  sold for private development which would have degraded our drinking  water quality and destroyed thousands of acres of beautiful wooded forestland.

* The exciting inovation of a the restoration of City of Rochester forested parkland at Washington Grove.
Our members founded a Washington Grove protection project that when completed  will provide residents with the oportunity to take a nature walk in the past, to walk in the park as it must have been 300 years ago. Original species are being returned to the park, invasives are being  removed. "Friends Of Washington Grove"  an offshoot of the Sierra Club Rochester Group  head-up the work and perform the maintence required to return The Washinton Grove to a state that likely existed over 300 years ago.

* The intervention in Wetlands destruction thru legal means, and community activisim.
Primary Projects: Working with Town of Henrietta and builders to prevent construction on flood plains. Intercetions/ involvement  in large scale building projects. The  restoration of a wetlands/stream in the Brighton Township.

* Educational forums: Each year for seventeen years, we have brought top scientists, writers and enviromental leaders to speak in our community. We understand that only through education will real and sustainable progress be made in the  care of our land, water and wildlife.
