Pikes Peak Group's Busy Start to Summer

The Pikes Peak Group has had a busy start to the summer. On May 17th, the group had a clean-up at Fountain Creek. A dozen dedicated volunteers picked up litter along the path and riverbank. It was fun to connect with like-minded people and inspiring to see so many folks that care about preserving our ecosystems and keeping the creek clean and healthy. See below for our next clean-up event!

Members of the group also attended the "No Kings" rally on June 14th in Downtown Colorado Springs. Over 10,000 people showed up to declare in one voice, there are no kings in America. The protest was in response to the constitutional overreach of the Trump administration, its cruel and inhumane immigration policies, and its lack of any action on any of the immediate crisis facing the nation, like climate disruption.

Wolf Conservation Report

By Judy Schulman

The 2024-2025 Annual Grey Wolf Report from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife has been released.

Here are some of the highlights (click here to read the full report):

The Copper Creek wolf pack was trapped and relocated due to livestock depredation.

There were 5 wolf mortalities in the time period covered in the report (4/1/2024-3/31/2025). Three of them were human caused.

The plan is for 10-15 wolves/yr. for 3-5 years- two releases have happened so far.

They are released west of Continental Divide only.

There is a 60-mile buffer from Tribal lands to the South and 60 miles from state boundaries to the North and West for the releases.

Livestock producers can contact District Wildlife Mgr. for non-lethal conflict minimization tools- Scare devices, carcass , range riding, night watch. There is $904,500 available for this- mostly from sale of "Born to be Wild" license plates.

There is also a $2.5 million award made available to CO livestock producers for management practices such as electric fences/fladry, carcass management, range riders, monitoring.

On June 17, 2025, Colorado Springs voters headed to the polls to vote on whether or not to approve the Karman Line Annexation.
