Sierra Club Asks DC Candidates to Use Fair Elections Public Financing

Resolution Encouraging Electoral Candidates to Participate
in DC's Fair Elections Public Financing Program

Whereas, DC's Fair Elections public financing program goes into effect for the 2020 election cycle;

Whereas, the Sierra Club strongly supported the legislation creating the Fair Elections program;

Whereas, the Fair Elections program matches small contributions from DC residents with public funds;

Whereas, candidates seeking Fair Elections funding may not accept contributions from corporations;

Whereas, for many years elected officials in the District have been unduly influenced by monied corporate interests that profit from dirty energy, including coal, oil, fracked gas, and nuclear; from opposing clean water and clean energy policies in buildings; from manufacturing and selling single-use plastics; and from expanding automobile infrastructure instead of sustainable transportation;

Whereas, the Fair Elections program reduces the influence of these corporate polluters and instead encourages small contributions;

Therefore, be it resolved that the Sierra Club encourages all candidates in DC to participate in the Fair Elections public financing program.
