Sierra Club DC volunteers at Green Budget Day of Action

Currently the Sierra Club DC Chapter has four big policy areas, a youth leadership development program, and lots of other happening things, and we welcome you to explore any or all of them with us!

Want to get involved in one of our committees? RSVP for a meeting on the chapter calendar, or see our volunteer page with open roles.

Our Chapter Committees with campaigns:

Our Clean Energy Committee is making DC a nation-wide leader in the clean energy transition by moving the city off methane gas, promoting efficient all-electric buildings, supporting a strong solar sector, and phasing out less-efficient lighting containing toxic mercury. Lara Levison is this committee’s volunteer Chair.

Our Water & Natural Places Committee works to protect the District’s water resources, advocate for clean rivers, sustainable stormwater management and safe drinking water. Current projects include equipping community members to enforce environmental remedies and protections at the redevelopment of RFK, and expanding and enforcing DC plans to remove lead from our drinking water. Larry Martin is this committee’s volunteer Chair.

Our Sustainable Transportation Committee advocates for effective and decarbonized transit, and a more bikeable and walkable DC. Current projects include advocating for clean electric buses, increased access and infrastructure to electric vehicles, and sustainable Metro funding. Mike Litt is this committee’s volunteer Chair.

Our Zero Waste Committee advocates for DC to prioritize reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting over incineration and landfilling. We are working to pass a Bottle Bill (a deposit-return law), adopt reusable food ware and building materials, massively expand DC’s composting and recycling programs, and track and expand the District's Zero Waste laws and plans. Susan Schorr is this committee’s volunteer Chair.

Our other Committees:

  • Membership

Our Membership Committee plans all the social and service events of the DC Chapter, with an aim to engage, diversify, and grow our membership base. Matt Gravatt is this committee’s volunteer Chair.

Our Youth Committee runs a 6-month program for DC high school students to become familiar with local environmental issues and get experience in organizing and advocacy. Our first cohort of 10 students graduated in April, and the second cohort has just begun. Catharine Ferguson and Peter Quinn-Jacobs are this committee’s volunteer Co-Chairs.
