The Sierra Club enthusiastically endorses Councilmember Charles Allen for re-election because of his years of exceptional leadership advancing climate and environmental protections in the District.

“The Sierra Club has endorsed Charles Allen every time he’s run for DC Council, and he has not let us down,” said Sierra Club DC Chapter Political Committee Chair Mark Rodeffer. “Councilmember Allen wrote landmark legislation to help low- and moderate-income families transition their homes from dirty fuels to clean energy, and now we’re working with him to fully fund that law. He’s a longtime champion for safe streets, from getting dangerous drivers off our roads to ensuring transit riders, pedestrians, and cyclists can get where they need to go safely, affordably, and without delay.”

Councilmember Allen’s achievements in his last term include writing and passing the following laws:

  • The Healthy Homes Act, which helps move our homes to clean energy, removing dangerous indoor air pollution from gas appliances;
  • The STEER Act, which authorizes DC’s attorney general to sue out-of-state drivers for endangering public safety and avoiding the consequences;
  • The Electric Bicycle Rebate Act, which expands access to e-bikes across DC;
  • The Comprehensive EV Infrastructure Access, Readiness, and Sustainability Act, which accelerates equitable access to EV charging across DC; and
  • The Public Life and Activity Zones Amendment (PLAZA) Act, which will create vibrant, weekly car-free corridors.

Councilmember Allen has also worked with the Sierra Club to reverse some of Mayor Bowser’s devastating budget cuts to the Department of Energy and Environment, add some environmental protections to the deal giving taxpayer dollars to billionaire football team owners for a stadium, and push DC’s recalcitrant utility regulators to transition the District away from fossil fuels. He is also a co-sponsor of a key Sierra Club priority, DC’s bottle deposit bill, and has pledged that his committee will hold a vote on the legislation in the coming months.

The Sierra Club asks its members to contribute to Charles Allen’s campaign. Because he is running as a Fair Elections candidate, contributions from DC residents will be matched five-to one. As a result, a $10 contribution turns into $60 and $50 means $300 for his campaign. Under the Fair Election system, he cannot accept any contribution over $50.

The Sierra Club is evaluating candidates in other 2026 races in DC and plans to make additional endorsements. The primary election is Tuesday, June 16, with early voting centers open from Monday, June 8 to Sunday, June 14.
