The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Janeese Lewis George for mayor. After more than a decade of stalled progress on climate and environmental priorities under DC’s current mayor, Janeese Lewis George will provide the leadership DC needs to turn our commitments into action.

“We know Janeese Lewis George’s record on the DC Council, and we know Kenyan McDuffie’s record. We are confident Councilmember Lewis George is the right candidate for voters who want to see bold progress on climate and environmental priorities,” said Sierra Club DC Chapter Political Committee Chair Mark Rodeffer. “When she’s elected mayor, we’re excited to work with Janeese Lewis George to get fossil fuels out of our homes, cut trash that pollutes our rivers and streets, and make roads safer for everyone.”

Councilmember Lewis George has fought to protect and fund a law ensuring that new DC government buildings are powered by clean energy instead of fossil fuels. She wrote legislation to rid DC of toxic mercury lighting. Councilmember Lewis George is a co-sponsor of a key Sierra Club priority, DC’s bottle deposit bill currently under consideration by the DC Council. And she has co-sponsored every piece of legislation the Sierra Club prioritized in the DC Council since she was sworn into office.

The Sierra Club encourages its members to contribute to Janeese Lewis George’s campaign. Because she is a Fair Elections candidate, contributions from DC residents will be matched five-to-one. So a $10 contribution turns into $60, and $200 means $1,200 for her campaign. Under the Fair Election system, fair elections candidates for mayor cannot accept any contribution over $200.

The Sierra Club is evaluating candidates in other 2026 races in DC and plans to make additional endorsements. The primary election is Tuesday, June 16, with early voting centers open from Monday, June 8 to Sunday, June 14.
