Florida Sierra Club Endorses Charlie Crist for Governor

St. Petersburg, FL- The Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club announced their endorsement for Congressman Charlie Crist to be the next Governor of Florida. The Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club has rarely weighed into the contest for Governor in the primary season, but the importance of the midterm elections led them to endorse the Congressman.

“It’s no secret that this election cycle will have deep repercussions for Florida’s communities, economy, and environment. We believe that Charlie Crist is the only candidate in this race that can defeat Ron DeSantis, take action to protect our environment and confront the ongoing climate crisis,” said Luigi Guadarrama, Political Director of Sierra Club Florida. “He’s a fighter. Through the course of this process we consistently heard from people that Charlie Crist was the only candidate that met with them and their communities, and we believe that he’ll take that with him to Tallahassee.”

Throughout his career in Tallahassee and DC, Crist has made the environment a priority and has maintained a strong relationship with the Sierra Club. As a Congressman, Charlie Crist has secured funding for the Everglades, helped secure a ban on offshore drilling, and has called for tighter regulations to help provide clean water to Floridians. As Governor, he helped lead the fight against the Climate Crisis, and set ambitious goals to curtail greenhouse gas emissions.

“I am honored to earn the support of Sierra Club Florida in our mission to unseat Governor DeSantis and protect Florida’s environment for generations to come,” said Charlie Crist. “Our Everglades, our beaches, our water, and our way of life are all on the line this November. We can’t continue sitting on the side lines when it comes to tackling existential environmental challenges like the climate crisis. Together, we are mounting a grassroots movement to change the course of our state. I could not be more excited to have the Sierra Club joining us in our fight to bring the sunshine back to the Sunshine State.”

The Sierra Club hasn’t been quiet about Governor DeSantis’ failure to take the environment seriously, and the impacts that those failures will have on Florida’s economy and quality of life. In 2020 the Club gave him a “D-.” As a result, the Sierra Club has made replacing Ron DeSantis a top priority, and will be taking the challenge to elect Charlie Crist seriously. As the oldest, largest environmental advocacy organization in the nation, the Sierra Club aims to mobilize their more than 240,000 members and supporters in Florida in both the primary and the upcoming general election. On top of this, the Sierra Club will be activating their grassroots network of volunteers and community leaders to support Crist and defeat DeSantis.

The Sierra Club looks forward to electing Charlie Crist, and working with him as governor to create meaningful change for Florida’s communities and environment.
