Sierra Club Florida Celebrates the Passage of State Park Preservation Act

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Sierra Club Florida issued the following statement on the Florida Legislature’s passage of the State Park Preservation Act:

Kristine Cunningham, Sierra Club Florida Executive Committee Chair, said, “Florida’s state parks are some of our greatest treasures, and today we celebrate a historic victory for their future. This success belongs to every Floridian who stood up, spoke out, and refused to let our parks be paved over for profit. The passage of the State Park Preservation Act proves that when we come together, we can protect the places we love — not just for ourselves, but for generations to come."

Javier Estevez, Sierra Club Florida Political and Legislative Director, said, “Since last summer, Sierra Club Florida and its members have been on the front lines fighting to keep development out of our state parks. From rallies and protests, to delegation meetings, district visits, our State Park Love Fests, and Lobby Day—we made our voices impossible to ignore. The Florida Legislature heard us loud and clear. And today, we can proudly say: WE WON!”

Sierra Club Florida remains committed to building a stronger, healthier Florida for all. Supporting environmental champions at every level of government is critical to protecting the state from dangerous legislation and politicians who ignore the needs of everyday Floridians. The passage of the State Park Preservation Act underscores the power of local action to affect statewide change, and we urge all our members and supporters to remain active and engaged in the fight for a better future for Florida.
