WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club strongly urges the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to reject the proposed Southland rock mine proposal in the Everglades Agricultural Area. We are deeply concerned by Palm Beach County's premature approval of the project before a comprehensive, science-based review has been completed by SFWMD.
This mine proposal directly violates the County’s Comprehensive Plan, which restricts mining in the Everglades Agricultural Area to only specific public purposes. Moreover, it poses a serious threat to Everglades restoration efforts by potentially disrupting water flow and compromising water quality.
Despite the applicant’s claims, the project lacks effective water quality treatment—a key concern for the region’s environmental health—and has not yet received approval from SFWMD, which is still conducting its multi-step review process.
We call on SFWMD to stand firm in its commitment to rigorous, science-driven decision-making and reject this proposal in order to protect Florida's Everglades for future generations.
