PROTECT OUR LANDS: 30X30

PROTECT LANDS LOGOThe science is clear: to save the climate, we need to protect public lands. From national parks to green space in cities, America’s wild places are one of our best tools for fighting climate change. Public lands are crucial for sequestering carbon, protecting from extreme weather, and providing habitat for wildlife. But right now, just 12% of America’s lands are protected from development. To bring things back into balance, we need to bring that number up to 30% -- and we need to get it done by 2030.

For too long, our lands and waters have been a playground for Big Oil. Today, mining, fracking and drilling on public lands generate 20% of our greenhouse gas emissions, and we’re losing the equivalent of a football field of wilderness every thirty seconds. That’s why we’re working on a plan to reverse this trend and use our lands as a climate solution.

Sierra Club's new 30X30 Campaign asks Congress on board. Legislators in the House and Senate have introduced two resolutions (Senate Res. 372 and House Res. 835) in support of a “Thirty by Thirty Plan to Save Nature” by protecting 30% of our lands and waters.

The resolution is gaining momentum, but it needs more support. Tell your legislator to sign on to the Thirty by Thirty plan! Sign the petition:
