The Governor’s Gainesville Regional Utility Authority (GRUA) has filed yet another lawsuit to stop the people of Gainesville from voting this November on who should control our utility. The lawsuit is frivolous — a judge has already rejected most of their arguments. And here’s the kicker: they’re using our rate payer money to fund it! The dollars we pay for water and electricity are being siphoned into yet another lawsuit.
Two years ago, the legislature stripped GRU from local control and handed it to Governor DeSantis’s appointees — people with little to no utility management experience. Our community was overwhelmingly opposed. At the time, they promised to lower rates, reduce debt, and keep politics out of GRU. Instead, they raised rates, failed to reduce debt, and turned GRU into a political machine.
They fired experienced utility professionals and replaced them with former politicians, paying the new CEO the highest salary in GRU history. And what does that CEO do? He spends his days posting partisan takes on social media and writing blogs for conservative outlets.
This November, we need your help getting people out to the vote. Since it is the only item on the ballot, many folks won’t know to vote. Join us canvassing, phone banking and doing outreach to get folks out to vote. Come to the next Energy and Climate Action Team meeting or email David Hastings to learn how to get involved!
Mark your calendar for November 4th.
Vote to YES on the referendum to remove the GRU Authority.
Take back our utility and our community.
