Action Alert: Stop GRU Referendum Reversal
A last-minute amendment in the Florida House would overturn Gainesville voters’ decision on the future of Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) and transfer control to the state.
The amendment was deviously added to HB 1451 at the last minute, before it passed the House. But we noticed. Thousands of emails were sent, calls were made, and residents showed up in legislators’ offices to speak directly with our representatives. That grassroots response made a difference: thank you to everyone who stepped up.
The Good News!
Take Action Now:
The Senate is expected to vote soon. Please call today or tomorrow, before Monday’s vote.
Ask senators to: “Let the courts decide and keep the bill bipartisan by passing a CLEAN version of SB 1724.”
Personal phone calls are best.

Key Talking Points
- Please move SB 1724 forward without the GRU referendum reversal language.
- Let the courts decide this issue rather than adding it to unrelated legislation.
- I support SB 1724’s goals of transparency and accountability for municipal utilities.
- A divisive provision should not be attached to an otherwise bipartisan bill.
- Gainesville voters deserve to have their voices respected.
Your calls and emails matter. Grassroots pressure has already brought attention to this issue. Let’s keep it going and protect a clean, bipartisan bill.
