Two Valves Opened Up Releasing Thousands of Gallons of Water

By Joyce Blumenshine

In mid-April, GFL Environmental, the owners of the Peoria Disposal Company (PDC) Hazardous Waste Landfill at the west edge of Peoria, reported vandalism occurring sometime between April 9 and 11th.  Public information on the incident was posted April 14th. The company stated that vandals opened two water discharge valves, releasing thousands of gallons of water from stormwater collection areas. The water was stated to have gone into area creeks and drainages. A ten-foot section of metal chain link fence was destroyed to gain access.

This landfill is closed and not accepting waste, although for decades highly toxic chemicals and industrial wastes were placed at the site. Currently it is in a 30 years closure monitoring phase, although not all clean-up is thought to have been completed. The company reported the incident to the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, which stated an investigation was being done. This summary is from various public information articles.
