Areas of the GFL (previously PDC) Hazardous Waste Landfill Not Yet Cleaned Up.
By Joyce Blumenshine
On August 26th HOI Group volunteers had a one-hour visit lead by Matt Coulter, GFL Environmental Waste Services, at the new GFL municipal waste transfer station construction site. It is located on Southport Road, Peoria, just west of Pottstown, on the grounds of the closed PDC hazardous waste landfill. The Transfer Station and public drop-off area are just up the hill from the gate on the main entry road. The location is prior to reaching the hazardous waste processing building and roll-off boxes where federally listed KO61 Hazardous Waste curing occurred in an outside area. Work to clean up the KO61 area is not completed and awaits IEPA approval.
Topics related to water monitoring results were discussed before the tour. During the tour, a large amount of earth moving was going on for the new Transfer Station, with ground being leveled and filled in. There is a deep ravine bordering the site. Mr. Coulter said he anticipated the new construction could be completed in late spring of 2026.
Heart of Illinois Group Sierra Club has many concerns regarding the delay in replacing the city/county landfill on publicly owned property at Edwards. After years of legal filings and negotiations, GFL was approved to build a new waste transfer station and have a ten year delay for building the new city/county landfill at Edwards. Originally, GFL was to follow through with PDC contracts to build the new landfill at the city/county owned municipal waste site. GFL purchased PDC and its various landfills, with existing contracts, in October 2021.
