December Speaker Series: The Bears Ears National Monument

Join us for our next monthly speaker series — The Bears Ears National Monument — on Tuesday, December 14 at 6:00 PM! We'll be joined by Sylvia Taylor, manager of the Bears Ears Education Center in Bluff, Utah. The education center is a component of the Friends of Cedar Creek Mesa (FCM), a non-profit which “…works to protect and build respect for the cultural and natural landscapes of the greater Bears Ear region.” This visitor-centered space is designed to teach people from near and far how to respectfully visit the natural and cultural spaces of Bears Ears National Monument. Sylvia will be sharing a poem entitled “Cedar Mesa, Cedar Mesa” by Vaughn Hadenfeldt to guide her presentation on the history, Indigenous People, and plants and animals of the region, as well as the conservation challenges facing Bears Ears National Monument. On October 8, 2021, President Biden issued a Presidential Proclamation modifying the boundaries of the Monument, which had been reduced during the prior administration. The region is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.

Sylvia holds a Masters in Natural Science and has diverse experiences, including as a science and chemistry teacher, volunteer firefighter, Park Ranger at the Trail of Tears State Park, fieldworker on climate at UC Berkeley, and medical assistant for ICU doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sylvia’s interests include exploring nature, ecological restoration, yoga, singing, and playing with her grandson.
