The North Dakota Chapter of the Sierra Club is currently focused on the following policy initiatives and legislative issues:
Elkhorn Ranch Bridge
(2015 to 2024) This controversial bridge was proposed near the Elkhorn Ranch unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It would have increased oilfield truck traffic in this region of the Little Missouri State Scenic River by providing a straight route across the area. It was strongly opposed by the conservation community as well as many local residents. Changes in the Billings County Commission has killed the proposal for now.
Maah Daah Hey National Monument Proposal
(2021-present) The North Dakota Chapter of the Sierra Club, along with other conservation groups and the MDA Nation have proposed the creation of Maah Daah Hey National Monument, which would be composed of 11 non-motorized management units of the Little Missouri National Grasslands, roughly connected by the Maah Daah Hey Trail. This proposal was made to the Biden Administration, and while we had great support, the actual designation did not take place. More information on the proposed MDH National Monument is found here.
