Sierra Club plays key role in winning campaign for supportive housing in Alameda

Yesterday, in a special election, Alameda’s voters reaffirmed a decision by their City Council to permit a wellness center for homeless residents of Alameda County opening near the State of California’s Crab Cove Visitor Center. By supporting this campaign, the Sierra Club advanced one of it core principles: the right of all people to a safe and healthful home environment.

The Sierra Club successfully countered arguments that the site proposed for the Wellness Center was needed to expand adjacent open space, in particular to expand the adjacent Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach.

The Alameda Wellness Center project is an efficient use of existing buildings. After renovation and construction is complete, the site will provide:

  • 80-90 units of Senior Permanent Supportive Housing.

  • A 50-bed recuperative care medical respite center for homeless adults departing hospitals or undergoing intensive medical treatment in Alameda County.

  • A resource center that provides linkages to resources and housing advocacy for Alameda residents experiencing or at-risk of homelessness.
