Point Molate Development Project (Richmond)

What's happening

Point Molate

Point Molate is a beautiful, mostly undeveloped shoreline area in Richmond. There has been a decades-long battle to protect Point Molate as a natural open space and more specifically by turning it into a world class regional park. While we think this is by far the best choice for the area, there have been competing interests including proposals for luxury housing and a casino development. Last year, Governor Newsom earmarked $36 million for the East Bay Regional Parks District to acquire the land. As of now, the money has not been used.

Why it matters

Richmond is a beautiful and diverse community that is green space deprived. Bringing a public park to the area would have incredible benefits for the city and beyond. Protecting Point Molate is an important part of protecting the biodiversity of the San Francisco Bay.

What’s next

Acquisition of the land is tied up due to ongoing legal battles of want-to-be developers and past pro-development city council deals. Advocates for Point Molate Regional Park are currently waiting for the legal proceedings to resolve so steps can be made to secure the land's future as a park.
