About Us

SF Bay birds

The Bay Alive Campaign is organized by Sierra Club Chapters located in the San Francisco Bay Area (Loma Prieta, San Francisco Bay, and Redwood Chapters) and Sierra Club California.  The Campaign consists of a regional, Bay-wide thrust which is designed to influence regional agencies, and a local thrust which works with local entities around the Bay.  The goal of both sides of the campaign is to promote the need to develop a collaborative and united approach to mitigating the damage to come from rising sea levels due to global climate change.

Our region-wide work is performed be a  committee composed of volunteers and staff from each chapter who develop region-wide policy positions and work with scientists, agencies and other entities that operate with a Bay-regional focus. In addition, each chapter takes action in its own geographic location to build local awareness and influence local entities.

Our Mission is to protect the health of our communities, our wildlife and our Earth by promoting living shorelines, healthy waters, and just, equitable, and economically beneficial solutions to sea level rise in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Our Goal is to serve as a catalyst to create a much greater awareness of the dangers to the ecological health of the San Francisco Bay as well as the surrounding community of sea level rise, and to educate that community to the need to have a collaborative, region-wide, nature-based adaption strategy in order to mitigate the consequences.  We also need to ensure that those under-served communities around the Bay get lifted up and included in those solutions rather than being left behind.

The Redwood Chapter
The Redwood Chapter is a geographically vast region composed of six local groups and encompassing all or part of nine counties in Northwest California: Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Lake, Mendocino, Trinity, Del Norte, Humboldt, and western Siskiyou. Although the geography and environmental challenges vary, we share one of the most remarkable regions in the United States and are committed to amplifying the power of our 11,000+ members and supporters to defend everyone’s right to a healthy world. The Chapter is proud to be a part of the most enduring and influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States.

Sierra Club California
Sierra Club California is the legislative and regulatory advocacy arm for Sierra Club chapters in California. The Sierra Club is one of the nation's oldest and largest environmental organizations. It was founded in 1892 by a group of Californians, including John Muir, who valued the state's wilderness areas. Today, the Club has chapters in every state and a national membership that exceeds 1 million. California is unique among states in that it has 13 chapters, representing more than 500,000 members and supporters. Sierra Club California was established in 1986 to help ensure that the Club speak with one strong voice on statewide environmental policy issues before the legislature and state agencies. Learn more about Sierra Club California Bay-related issues on our SF Bay Delta Protection page.

The Campaign is funded through a bequest received by the Loma Prieta Chapter from the Rohloff Estate.
