November 2016 Edition

General Meeting, November 10, 2016 — Underwater Photography in the Guif of Mexico

On Thursday evening, November 10, we dive into the fascinating world of underwater photography for a stunning look at the Gulf of Mexico with photographer and author, Jesse Cancelmo. Jesse brings the story of the Gulf of Mexico to life with vivid images of its beautiful inhabitants and its serious challenges. From porcupine fish and red crab, to spotted rays and whale sharks, the Gulf of Mexico features a surprising bouquet of exotic beauties, and Jesse will share some of his favorite images, as well as his latest book on the Glorious Gulf of Mexico, with us on November 10. The event is free and open to the public at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1805 West Alabama, Houston. Main program starts 7:30 PM. Doors open 7:00 PM.

December Celebration

Our December holiday gathering will take place this year at our General Meeting on Thursday, December 8. We will have a silent auction and celebrate the holidays. Good food, short films, maybe games and music, will round out our celebration for this year. Come and enjoy the December celebration meeting.

Houston Group Executive Committee Election 2016

Each December the Houston Group holds an election to fill positions on the Group’s nine member Executive Committee (Excom). Candidate and ballot information will be posted to the Houston Group’s website, and members will print out, mark and mail in their completed ballot. An announcement and details for the election will be included in the December Bayou Banner (e-newsletter), and a postcard with the same election information will be mailed out to members for whom we do not have email addresses.

Galveston Bay Plan

Galveston Bay is one of the most important ecological areas in Texas. This 31 by 17 mile estuary is highly productive for shellfish (oysters and shrimp) and finfish (Spotted Sea Trout and Red Drum); has many recreational and tourist attractions (Clear Lake Area and Galveston Island); and is economic home to many oil, natural gas, pipeline, and petrochemical companies and facilities.

The Galveston Bay Estuary Program began its revision of the 21 year old Galveston Bay Plan (GBP, officially called a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan) on October 26, 2016, when it held the first public workshop.

Sometimes Nature Stings

I counted. There were 12 of us. These were good folks. Good people are the second prerequisite for a successful outing, after choosing a beautiful place to visit. That was taken care of with Little Lake Creek Wilderness Area. The only wilderness in Sam Houston National Forest has the Lone Star Hiking Trail which snakes through and made our hike easier, but still challenging.
