Making Polluters Pay and Ensuring Drinking Water For All: Sierra Club Spring Lobby Day, Wednesday, May 15

Last year, Sierra Club members came out in droves to advocate for strong clean energy policies, and it paid off. Because of your grassroots activism and collaborative advocacy in driving positive change, Michigan passed one of the nation's leading clean energy standards of getting to 100% by 2040.

While the 100% clean energy law is a huge success for Michigan, there’s still more work for us to do to protect our communities and natural resources, and we need your help! Join us Wednesday, May 15, in Lansing as part of the Sierra Club’s annual spring Lobby Day when we come together to advocate for polluter pay and water affordability legislation already introduced in the Legislature.

In Michigan, despite being surrounded by over 20% of the world's freshwater, residential water rates have soared over the last four decades. Shifts in funding have led to a crumbling water infrastructure. Approximately 1 in 10 Michigan families struggle with water affordability and water shutoffs by utilities, despite water being a human right The state previously had robust "polluter pay" laws until 1995, which have since been gutted, resulting in over 24,000 contaminated sites and shifting cleanup costs to taxpayers. There's a pressing need to ensure water affordability and strong polluter pay laws to hold corporate polluters accountable.

Lobby Day presents a unique opportunity for us to engage directly with lawmakers and policymakers, to share our perspectives, and to collectively drive positive change. No experience is necessary to participate since we will host a training session beforehand to give you all the information you need.
