November Program Topic:

Establishing a Citywide Reusable Foodware System in Galveston

On November 9, our speaker will be Joanie Steinhaus, the Gulf of Mexico Program Director for the Turtle Island Restoration Network (TIRN). In partnership with Perpetual, TIRN is on the frontlines of establishing a city-scale reusable foodware system in Galveston, TX. Reusable foodware systems offer a compelling solution to the waste and pollution generated by single-use foodware. Establishing a city-wide reusable foodware system requires extensive community engagement and outreach during the reuse system design process as well as compelling education campaigns for businesses and the general public to support the launch and successful operation of the reusable foodware system. This engagement is also a natural opportunity to provide education on diverting organic waste for composting and reducing contamination in recycling streams, supporting these communities on a path toward zero waste.

Perpetual is a nonprofit launched in early 2022 by a team with a collective 20+ years of experience in the reusable foodware space. Perpetual’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of reuse, starting with foodware in the US.
