Sierra Club Chapter Director Says Goodbye

Three years as your Oklahoma Chapter Director has been so full of learning that it feels like both a long time and the blink of an eye. It is hard to know just how to say goodbye as Chapter Director, but I’m afraid that time has come. I will be rejoining your ranks as a Sierra Club volunteer instead of staff, effective October 16th.

I can’t say thank you enough to all my fellow Sierrans who renew their commitment to “explore, enjoy, and protect” every day and in so many ways. I’ve witnessed passionate conservationists, strategic advocates, thoughtful policy analysts, enthusiastic hikers, organized event planners, joyful celebrants, and determined whistleblowers over the past few years. If you consider the 125-plus years of the Sierra Club, my tenure on staff has been brief, but I’m proud to be part of this Oklahoma environmentalism story, and I plan to continue with you in other ways.

Are you willing to help us find new leaders for the Club? This is my one request as I depart from this role. If you believe in the Oklahoma Sierra Club, please participate by volunteering or nominating someone to serve on our statewide Chapter Executive Committee or on the ExCom of one of our three regional Groups.

ExCom members guide the direction of our campaigns in Norman (Red Earth), OKC (Cimarron), Tulsa (Green Country), and statewide (Chapter). These leaders direct our activities, find the generous donors who fund our important work, hire staff like me, and so much more. The four ExCom teams I mentioned are already full of great people I will deeply miss as I leave. We’re not asking anyone to go it alone! Will you join them, OR send them some good people who can?

Our nomination committees are still collaborating on the election process, so for now, you can offer to help by signing up via our regular volunteer form and indicating your willingness to take the next step to lead, or connecting us to other new leaders.

In closing, let me remind you that the Sierra Club is run and led by volunteers, and our excellent programs will continue. Please check our website calendar for upcoming events like "Data Center Considerations for Communities," "Martin Park is for the Birds," a hike at Sutton Wilderness, "Arbooooretum Tree Trunks & Treats" at Woodward Park, a campout at the Wichita Mountains, and so much more!
Thanks again to each and every one of you, and I hope to see you at a Sierra Club event sometime soon.
