On Saturday, April 26th, junior high and high school students from across the state will gather on Zoom to build community and learn about youth climate action in New York State. The Atlantic Chapter will be hosting a virtual Climate Action Youth Summit to bring students together around taking meaningful action on climate change and environmental issues in their communities.
New York is often considered an environmentally conscious place to live, but many students don’t have easy avenues to climate action in their communities, schools, and organizations, despite their interest, concern, and passion for the world around them. New York is currently considering a climate curriculum bill in the state legislature, and climate education in schools is a crucial step to giving students the resources they need to learn the facts about their local and global environments. But on top of this, students need to be able to turn that information into action. Many students are already leading the way and Sierra Club is here to help.
The Climate Action Youth Summit will feature a swath of speakers, panelists, and breakout group leaders from the forefront of the sustainability movement, including youth climate leaders, activists, and those working in establishments and organizations on the frontlines of climate work including government, companies, and nonprofits. Students will not just be listening, but participating and leading, with opt-in breakout groups focused on energy, sustainable fashion, environmental justice, and more.
Students will be given the chance to take online actions on the spot throughout the Summit about what they are learning. Students will come away with a toolkit of skills they can bring into their daily lives, as well as a new community of young climate leaders to rely on, across the state. Students who complete the program will earn a Climate Action Certificate.
