A Note from Our Director

At critical moments in time, you’ve stepped up so that together, we can defend Coloradans’ rights to clean air and clean energy, and defend our public lands and the safety of our communities. This is one of those moments. I’m asking you to take action now and give to ensure that our vital work can continue.

In just the last year, we have seen the effects of climate change firsthand: unseasonably warm weather causing snow drought in the mountains, tropical storms in the Pacific causing deluges of rain and flooding in Southwest Colorado, the Lee Fire on the Western Slope becoming Colorado’s fourth largest wildfire, and hurricane-force winds and dryness so extreme that Xcel Energy had to shut off power in many areas along the Front Range. There’s so much work to be done to protect our communities and stabilize our climate.

Whether you give because you want to protect Colorado’s fragile biodiversity, you want to ensure your children and grandchildren have the best planet to live on, you just enjoy exploring the outdoors, or all of the above, your commitment makes you a key member of this team.

Here’s how the Colorado Chapter is tackling this year’s challenges head-on:

  • Passing legislation for clean energy over dirty and expensive coal. We’re working hard to pass bills to achieve 100% clean energy in Colorado. We’re showing up at the Capitol, testifying on behalf of commonsense clean energy legislation, and mobilizing constituents to demand action from their elected leaders. As demand for energy increases with the construction of data centers and other energy-intensive projects, Coloradans and our environment cannot be burdened with the cost of dirty and expensive energy. Colorado can no longer rely on coal, and we are fighting to transition to clean, renewable energy.
  • Protecting Colorado’s public lands. As Coloradans, we love our public lands and the access to nature, clean water, and natural habitats they provide. In the face of Trump’s threats to public lands, Colorado can lead in pushing back. We’re mobilizing our members to demand our leaders defend the places that make Colorado so special.
  • Making polluters pay. We have witnessed numerous climate disasters in Colorado, and we recognize that the biggest polluters should be held responsible for cleanup efforts and resilience. We are educating decision-makers about the impacts of floods, fires, and droughts, and demanding support for our communities so taxpayers don’t bear the burden.

The work we’re doing together is more critical now than ever before. Due to the federal government’s inaction and corporate interests’ schemes, we’re witnessing extreme attacks on Colorado’s environment. Our opponents have deep connections and even deeper pockets, and stopping them won’t be easy.

But to change everything, we need everyone. This movement is people-powered and people-funded. While our big polluter opponents may have more money, we have people-power—people are the beating heart of the Sierra Club. People like you. That’s why today, I’m asking for your support—so that together, we can keep our movement growing. Please give whatever you can today.

The Sierra Club’s grassroots changemakers are notoriously effective, which is why we need folks to join our cause. Our volunteers and staff hold relationships and expertise that allow us to win, even with the odds stacked against us. And when we win, it ensures we protect our communities and what makes Colorado so special.

You may find that I’m writing with a special sense of urgency. I’ll be honest: The challenges we face right now are daunting. The good news is that we know how to overcome them—but only if we have the resources to execute our plans.

Donors are the backbone of our work, and your dedication to our community makes all the difference in whether we win or lose.

Thank you for everything you do,

Margaret Kran-Annexstein
