Powering Community Missions Through Clean Energy

Suncoast Sierra Club’s Clean Energy Team is dedicated to supporting local cities, organizations, churches, and nonprofits in improving energy efficiency and exploring clean energy solutions that strengthen both their missions and our communities.

Our team members work hand-in-hand to assist community partners to improve energy efficiency, install solar, and even provide free EV charging, allowing them to redirect money from utility bills back into their missions and community work.

If you have expertise in energy efficiency or solar, join the team!

Tracking Clean Energy Progress

The Suncoast Group is proud of its heritage as one of the first Sierra Club groups to champion the clean energy revolution.  In 2016, we kicked off our "Ready for 100" clean energy campaign to gain commitments from our local communities. To date Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Dunedin, Largo and Safety Harbor have clean energy goals. We applaud these cities for embracing the vision of a sustainable future:

St Petersburg:  Tampa Bay Times (2024):  How Close is St Pete to Clean Energy Goal

In 2016, the  most populated city in Pinellas County,  the City of St. Petersburg ( (266,411),) became the first city in Florida and the 20th city nationally to commit to 100% clean energy.  The Integrated Sustainability Action Plan created a Clean Energy Roadmap.

Clearwater:  Click for more info - Clearwater Greenprint 2.0 has two overarching goals:

  • Reduce the city’s GHG emissions 25% below 2007 levels by 2035 and;
  • Reduce the city’s GHG emissions 80% below 2007 emission levels by 2050.

LargoIn support of Largo’s strategic focus on sustainability, Largo City Commission voted to approve an organizational commitment to achieve 100 percent renewable, zero-emission energy by 2035.  Click here for more information.

Dunedin:  In December of 2018, the City of Dunedin committed to convert all municipal facilities to 100 percent renewables by the year 2035, and the rest of the City to clean energy by 2050.  This led to the creation of the D.R.E.A.M. plan in 2022.  Click for more information.

Safety Harbor:  In 2019 the City of Safety Harbor committed to an organizational target of powering City facilities and operations with 100% renewable, zero emission energy sources no later than 2035 and a commitment to support the transition of our community to 100% renewable, zero emission energy sources.  Our Pinellas County Solar Dashboard  was developed to create a clearer picture of how solar energy adoption is growing across Pinellas County and how communities are progressing toward clean energy goals. It showcases  the cost savings and pollution reduction benefits of solar energy in our region. Take a look!

Do you have data management experience? We need volunteers to help keep this dashboard updated.
