July Speaker Series: Prehistoric Cahokia Mounds Culture and Environment

Join us for our next monthly speaker series — Prehistoric Cahokia Mounds Culture and Environment — on Tuesday, July 12 at 6:30pm! We'll be joined by Bill Iseminger, an archaeologist and well-known author who recently retired from his position as Assistant Site Manager at the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville, Illinois. Bill's presentation will cover the previous cultural traditions and the rise and eventual demise of Cahokia, the largest prehistoric settlement north of Mexico. Bill will share more about the site's features, past and current archaeological research, and the development of the world-class Interpretive Center at the Historic Site. He will cover the change in culture from the earliest Paleo-Indian nomads who hunted mammoths and mastodons, to the Archaic period with the introduction of horticulture and mound building, to the Woodland period that introduced pottery, bows and arrows, and corn agriculture, and finally to the Mississippian period with its expanded agriculture and large permanent settlements, with a focus on Cahokia Mounds.

The event will be held in-person at the Old Bakery Beer Company at 400 Landmarks Boulevard in Alton, Illinois. Attendees and friends are invited to have dinner and meet the speaker at the Old Bakery Beer Company in advance of the program at 5:00pm. The speaking program will begin at 6:30pm in the room adjacent to Old Bakery Beer Company's dining room. There is a virtual option to tune into the speaking program via Zoom at 6:30pm for folks who are unable to join us in-person. Register here to join us (either virtually or in-person) for our July Speaker Series to learn more from Bill about the Prehistoric Cahokia Mounds!
