Sierra Club Ohio Updates- April Newsletter

Welcome to Spring & Happy Earth Month🌸🌍

As we embrace the vibrant energy of Spring and Earth Month, the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter is excited for the opportunities and growth this season brings. Just as the natural world begins to bloom, we are focused on expanding our impact and deepening our connections within our community of environmental advocates.

Recruiting Volunteer Leaders: We are actively seeking volunteer leaders, particularly in the areas of volunteer support for our Finance and Communications Committees. These committees play a critical role in supporting the infrastructure of our chapter, and we need dedicated individuals to help guide our efforts. If you have a background or interest in these areas, we encourage you to get involved and help strengthen our team!

Action Alert: Ohioans are currently paying higher electric bills to bail out two outdated, polluting coal plants—one of which is located in Indiana. This bailout, initiated by the corrupt House Bill 6 (HB6) in 2019, forces residents to cover the costs of the Ohio Valley Electric Corporation's (OVEC) Kyger Creek and Clifty Creek plants, which contribute to significant air pollution and cost Ohioans $233,000 daily. The bailout has been unpopular and serves no benefit to residents.

However, there is new hope for change. Legislation to repeal the bailout, in the form of House Bill 15 (HB15) and Senate Bill 2 (SB2), has been introduced in both the Ohio House and Senate. Sierra Club members and supporters are urged to contact their State Representatives and Senators to express support for the repeal and push back against utility industry lobbying efforts to maintain the bailout. The time for action is now to end the OVEC coal plant bailout and protect Ohioans from continued financial burden and environmental harm.

New PO Box Mailing Address: Please note that we have a new PO Box mailing address! You can find the updated address later in this newsletter, and we ask that you direct any future correspondence to this new location. Thank you for helping us keep things running smoothly.

Ex Com Updates: The Executive Committee (Ex Com) continues to meet regularly to ensure our chapter is on track with its goals and initiatives. To keep you informed, we are now publishing meeting minutes via email to our Members after each meeting. If you're not already receiving these updates, please reach out and let us know.

Exciting Solar News in Ohio: There’s great news on the horizon for solar energy in Ohio! We are seeing an exciting push for more clean, renewable energy solutions throughout the state. As we advocate for policies that support solar energy, we are hopeful that Ohio will continue to make progress toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

Join our Issues (Conservation) Committee: We are also continuing to recruit new volunteers for our Issues (Conservation) Committee. This committee is at the heart of our work, focused on driving conservation efforts and advocating for the environment across Ohio. If you’re passionate about conservation and want to get involved, the link to join is located later in this newsletter. We’re thrilled to welcome new volunteers and are excited to see the great work we’ll do together!

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our shared mission. We look forward to all that we will accomplish this Spring, with your support and involvement!

In solidarity,

Ericka Copeland
Sierra Club Ohio Chapter Director

Flyer Picturing Donald Trump and Elon Musk with the text 'Hands Off'. Hands Off Flyer taken from the Hands Off Moblization

Dear Members and Supporters of the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter,

On April 5, national and local organizations are coming together across the country to organize for Hands Off!, a national mass activation in defiance of the Trump-Musk billionaire takeover and the Republican assault on our freedoms and our communities. This is an all-in moment for the pro-democracy, pro-worker movement- a demand, a warning, and a rallying cry that responds to the primary reasons for our mobilization:
Register
  • Trump and Musk are attempting an illegal power grab is a crisis we must stop

  • Trump, Musk and congressional Republicans are gutting services, raising prices, and racing towards slashing Medicaid, Social Security, and more

  • Trump, Musk, and congressional Republicans are on this path of destruction for the benefit of their billionaire allies

STATE OF PLAY: WHY WE'RE MOBILIZING APRIL 5
✋The lawlessness, cruelty, and corruption have gone too far. On April 5, we unite to say: Hands Off!

Whether you're outraged by the attacks on public lands, skyrocketing healthcare costs, job cuts, attacks on privacy, or the gutting of essential services- this moment is for you. Whether you've been in the fight for years of you're just fed up and ready to take action- this moment is for you.

Please feel free to participate on April 5th and use the link to find an event close to you: https://www.mobilize.us/handsoff/

Best Regards,

Ericka Copeland
Chapter Director

Right now, all Ohioans are paying more on their electric bills each month to bail out two old, uneconomic, dirty coal plants -- one of which isn't even in Ohio! But, there’s new hope to end this bailout forever and with your action, we can make that hope a reality.

When Ohio legislators passed the historically corrupt House Bill 6 (HB6) in 2019, they forced all Ohioans to pay more on their electric bills to bail out the Ohio Valley Electric Corporation's (OVEC) two dirty, inefficient, and outdated coal plants; the Kyger Creek plant in Ohio and the Clifty Creek plant in Indiana. These plants are major contributors to air pollution in and around Ohio, and are costing Ohioans $233,000 a day.

This bailout has never been popular and serves no benefit to Ohioans. Sierra Club members and supporters have fought for years to get this corrupt, expensive, dirty bailout repealed and finally, the legislature is taking action!

Contact your State Representative and State Senator; tell them it's time to end the OVEC coal plant bailout once and for all!

The Ohio House of Representatives and Senate have both introduced priority legislation -- House Bill 15 (HB15) and Senate Bill 2 (SB2) -- that include provisions to repeal the OVEC coal plant bailout and end it once and for all. Years of grassroots pressure and month after month costs to Ohioans have made it clear; there's no place for coal plant bailouts in Ohio and it's time to end it for the OVEC plants once and for all.

Send a message to your legislators; let them know you support the OVEC coal plant bailout repeal that's part of HB15 and SB2!

We must make sure Ohio State Legislators stand strong against utility industry efforts to continue to stick us with the check for their bad business decisions with the OVEC plants. Already the utilities are at work lobbying to keep the bailout in place making claims about possible future costs and fear mongering about grid reliability; claims that just don't hold up under scrutiny.

Now is the time for action. Ohio State Legislators are on the path to doing the right thing and ending the OVEC coal plant bailout once and for all but that only happens if they hear from their constituents, know they have public support, and we are able to push back against big utility lobbying.

Send your message, make your voice heard, help end the OVEC coal plant bailout TODAY!

Sincerely,

Neil Waggoner
Midwest Beyond Coal Campaign Manager

Ben Jealous Visits Ashland University to Advocate for Climate Action

On March 26th, Ashland University welcomed Sierra Club Executive Director, Ben Jealous, for a keynote address and Q&A session. Before the event, a $100-a-plate fundraiser dinner supported the Ashland Center for Nonviolence. During his speech, Jealous urged attendees to engage with environmental coalitions like the Sierra Club to tackle climate change and address the impacts of government policies. The evening also featured a VIP dinner interview with Dr. Patricia Saunders, Professor of Biology and Director of the Environmental Science Program, discussing Jealous' new book and views on climate change.

Attending the event were Dick Beck, Portage Trail Group Chair, Ericka Copeland, the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter Director, Chad Stephens, Sierra Club Ohio Chapter Conservation Coordinator, along with a host of volunteers from the Portage Trail Group.

We’re incredibly excited to announce that we’ve recruited 20 new volunteers, primarily college students, who are eager to join the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter and roll up their sleeves to make a difference! Their enthusiasm and passion for environmental action are truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing work they’ll contribute to our mission!

Bill Update

Big win for clean energy! The Ohio House passed HB 15 (90-3), advancing Community Solar and repealing the OVEC coal bailout. This bill paves the way for 25,000 Ohioans to access lower-cost solar while ending subsidies for two aging coal plants—one out of state! With strong bipartisan support, HB 15 now heads toward integration with SB 2 in the Senate. This is a major step toward a cleaner, fairer energy future in Ohio!  -Mryia Williams, Ohio Program Director for Solar United Neighbors
