June 2025 Newsletter

Sierra Club Ohio
From the Director’s Desk

Dear Sierra Club Ohio Chapter Members and Supporters,
Welcome to June—a time of momentum, remembrance, and action. As the days grow longer and brighter, so does our determination to build a more just, sustainable future for all Ohioans. I’m filled with gratitude and excitement for the work we’re doing together to build a cleaner, healthier, and more just Ohio.

This month, we’re shining a light on an issue that affects all of us: energy justice. On June 4 at 7:00 PM ET, we’re hosting an important webinar on PJM, the shadowy organization that manages the regional power grid for much of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. PJM has become a major barrier to clean energy—delaying nearly 3,000 renewable energy projects while propping up fossil fuels.

📢 Click here to RSVP for the webinar

You’ll learn what PJM is, how it operates behind the scenes to favor polluting industries, and most importantly—what you can do to demand change. We’ll walk through what PJM is, why it matters, and how we can demand better for our communities, our climate, and our wallets.

If you’ve ever wondered why your energy bills keep rising while climate action feels stalled, this webinar is for you.

We’re also celebrating some major milestones:

🌇 A heartfelt thank you to the incredible volunteers and supporters who helped shape the Cleveland Climate Action Plan. Your voices made a difference! The new plan is ambitious, equity-centered, and a shining example of what community-driven climate leadership can look like. Let’s use it as a blueprint for cities across Ohio.

🏛️ We’re thrilled to launch our new monthly State Issues Committee meetings, where members can get involved in shaping our advocacy and campaigns on environmental issues throughout Ohio. If you’re passionate about state policy, this is a great place to plug in.

🚶🏽‍♀️We also just wrapped up a successful Outdoor Leader Training weekend near Miami Whitewater Forest. It was an inspiring reminder of the power of building capacity, creating safe and inclusive outdoor experiences, and strengthening the foundation of our movement.

While we continue to challenge harmful oil and gas leasing proposals in Wayne National Forest, I want to thank all who have supported this critical work. Your advocacy and vigilance help us stand strong in defense of Ohio’s only national forest.

We also have a lot to celebrate this month: 🌿 The long-overdue repeal of the OVEC coal bailout—a major victory for ratepayers and climate justice. And as we honor Juneteenth on June 19th, we’re reminded that the fight for justice includes environmental justice. Juneteenth celebrates freedom and resilience in communities that have faced historic oppression, reminding us to keep pushing for clean air, safe water, and green spaces for everyone. Join local Juneteenth events across Ohio and honor the powerful link between justice and a healthy environment. Find events near you.

If you’re ready to go even deeper, we’re looking for volunteer leaders to join us in shaping the future of the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter. We have openings in finance, communications, conservation, and more. You’ll find role descriptions and links to apply in this newsletter. Your leadership can make the difference.

This summer, let’s keep showing up—for each other, for the planet, and for justice. Thank you for your continued support, your energy, and your commitment to protecting the people and places we love. I look forward to working alongside you in the months ahead.

In solidarity,
Ericka Copeland

The Hidden Culprit Behind
Your High Energy Bills

Pictured: PJM 101 Webinar Date and Information

Nearly 3,000 energy projects, approximately 95% of which involve renewable energy, are currently backlogged.

One of the main culprits behind this? PJM, a shadowy organization that manages energy transmission across several states.

We will be hosting a webinar on June 4th at 7:00 PM EST that will introduce you to PJM, demonstrate some of its problematic practices that have favored fossil fuels over clean energy, and provide actions for you to take to tell PJM to clean up its act.

Celebrating our Wins

Cleveland Action Plan

Big thanks to all the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter members who shared their voices and helped shape Cleveland’s updated Climate Action Plan!

This new plan lays out forty-three goals across key areas like clean energy, transportation, and climate resilience, all aimed at improving our air and water and protecting the most vulnerable in our communities. With a clear path to net-zero emissions by 2050, the Plan centers equity and makes sure places like our recreation centers are ready to support residents through extreme weather and other climate challenges.

Let Cleveland be the blueprint—now it’s time for every city to step up. We’re calling on local leaders across the country to create their own bold, equity-centered Climate Action Plans that prioritize clean air, resilient communities, and a livable future for all. Join us in demanding climate action in your city—because the time to act is now.

Victory for Ohio Ratepayers and the Climate:
OVEC Coal Bailout Repealed

In a major win for Ohioans and clean energy advocates, the state legislature has passed HB15, sending it to Governor DeWine for signature. Among the bill’s key provisions is the long-overdue repeal of the OVEC coal plant bailout—a costly and controversial subsidy that forced Ohio electric customers to fund outdated, out-of-state coal plants. This is a critical step toward energy justice and accountability in the wake of the House Bill 6 scandal.

Celebrate Juneteenth 2025: Honoring Freedom, Empowering Justice, and Protecting Our Environment in Ohio

Every year on June 19th, Juneteenth commemorates a pivotal moment in American history—the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally informed of their freedom. This joyful occasion symbolizes the resilience and strength of  BIPOC communities and their ongoing journey toward equality and justice.

Juneteenth holds deep significance for Ohioans as well, with vibrant celebrations taking place across our state—from Columbus to Cleveland and beyond. It’s a day to reflect on the sacrifices made for freedom and to celebrate the rich culture, music, and traditions that uplift our communities.

But Juneteenth is more than a celebration. It’s a call to action. The fight for freedom extends to environmental justice, where communities of color often bear the brunt of pollution, climate change impacts, and limited access to nature. At Sierra Club Ohio, we recognize that environmental health and social equity are intertwined, and we are committed to working alongside communities to ensure clean air, safe water, and green spaces for all.

We invite you to join us in celebrating Juneteenth by participating in local events, learning about Ohio’s rich BIPOC history, and supporting environmental justice initiatives that make a real difference. Discover opportunities near you and share the spirit of Juneteenth with your family, friends, and neighbors.

Find out more about Ohio’s Juneteenth celebrations here: Ohio’s Juneteenth Celebrations

Let’s come together to honor history, celebrate culture, and renew our commitment to justice—for our communities and our planet. Happy Juneteenth!

Court Blocks Extraction at
Wayne National Forest

Heartwood and Ohio Valley Allies appealed a U.S. Bureau of Land Management decision to lease parts of the Wayne National Forest for oil and gas drilling. The appeal, filed before the Interior Board of Land Appeals, follows up a similar challenge to a BLM decision in 2016, and, if successful, will prevent BLM from approving leases in the Wayne National Forest for the foreseeable future.

Building Capacity for Outdoor Leadership: Successful Training Weekend
at UC Field Center

On May 17, Sierra Club Ohio hosted a dynamic Outdoor Leader Training (OLT) at the University of Cincinnati Field Center near Miami Whitewater Forest. The University of Cincinnati generously allowed us to use this beautiful and well-equipped facility free of charge—an incredible show of partnership in support of equitable outdoor access.

The training included two essential components for certified outings leadership: the mandatory Outings Leader Training and Basic First Aid/CPR certification, both crucial for ensuring the safety and preparedness of our volunteer leaders during group outings.

Thanks to the support of Sierra Club National, participants incurred no costs, with the Health and Safety Institute providing First Aid certification coverage.

We were thrilled to welcome a total of eight participants, including four new leaders and one representative from the Portage Trail Group. For the remaining attendees, this training served as their biennial refresher, as required every two years.

The weekend was marked by strong engagement, knowledge-sharing, and a renewed commitment to making the outdoors more accessible, inclusive, and safe for all. It’s energizing to see new leaders stepping forward, and we’re proud to continue investing in the development of our outing’s community.

Check out a few snapshots from the weekend below—we’re already looking forward to the next training session!
