From the Executive Director: A Rising Movement, Fueled by YouHello to All Who Power the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter,
As we look toward a new year, I am filled with gratitude and renewed determination. Every day, I see proof that the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter is powered by something extraordinary: a community of people who show up, stand up, and refuse to give up on a healthier, more just Ohio.
This fall, that spirit was on full display along the Olentangy River Trail. Thirty-seven volunteers—students, families, lifelong advocates, and first-time participants—came together in crisp autumn air to remove over 1,100 pounds of trash from just two miles of riverbank. Tires, debris, even a ping-pong table—each piece of waste removed was an act of care for our shared home. Together, we didn’t just clean up a trail; we demonstrated what collective action can achieve.
Across the state, that same energy is fueling our educational and advocacy efforts. Our Issues Committee and Water Lead, Dr. Christopher Miller, are bringing the truth about “forever chemicals” to communities, empowering Ohioans with knowledge to protect their health and environment. And in the face of legislative threats like HB 96, our coalition is stepping forward to defend Ohioans’ fundamental right to clean air and transparent environmental governance. This is what people-powered resilience looks like.
This season also marked an important moment of democracy and leadership within our own Chapter. We held our annual Executive Committee elections, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to every Member who took the time to vote. Your participation strengthens our Chapter and keeps our mission people-powered at every level.
Congratulations to Justin Thompson and Nancy Bertaux, who have been elected to serve as Members of our Chapter’s Executive Committee. Their passion, commitment, and vision will deepen our collective impact, and we are confident they will enrich our Chapter’s work in the year ahead.
And now, as we move fully into the holiday season, we are reminded that sustainability is not only a policy—it’s a practice. Small, intentional choices in our homes and communities ripple outward to create meaningful change.
But the strongest force we have is you.
Your passion. Your leadership. Your willingness to act.
This newsletter is filled with opportunities to step deeper into the movement—through leadership roles, committee work, or the growing Outings program helping bring Outdoors for All to life across Ohio. If you believe in this mission, if you want Ohio to be a place where clean air, safe water, public lands, and justice aren’t privileges but guarantees—there is a place for you in this work. And if you are not yet a Sierra Club Member, I invite you to become one.Membership strengthens our advocacy, sustains our organizing, and expands our collective power to protect Ohio’s communities and natural places.
If you are a Member, thank you. Please consider inviting one other person—someone who shares your love for Ohio’s people and natural spaces—to join us. Every new Member adds another voice to this movement and brings us closer to the future we’re fighting for.
Together, we are not just responding to challenges; we are shaping the future. I am honored to stand alongside you as we continue building a powerful, people-centered environmental movement—one that protects our communities, restores our natural places, and inspires hope for generations to come.
With deep appreciation and forward momentum,
Ericka Copeland Executive Director, Sierra Club Ohio Chapter
