Nature for Stress #OptOutside

Optoutside
Instead of Black Friday, the Sierra Club is leaving the shopping carts behind and choosing #OptOutside instead. It’s designed to “reconnect with what truly matters,” such as spending your day outdoors instead of shopping malls, and on computers and social media. Celebrate the power of nature. Stressed? Look to Your Local Nature Preserve, which includes the Ventura Land Trust, Ojai Valley Land Conservancy and in Santa Barbara The Land Conservancy and SB Conservancy – a partial list.

Supporting the preservation of outdoor spaces helps our ecosystem and is an investment toward improved health and happiness

Spending time outdoors is essential for mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Studies consistently show that exposure to nature reduces stress, improves mood, and enhances overall health. Ventura Land Trust (VLT) is an organization committed to preserving and protecting natural spaces, providing the region with vital access to outdoor areas that provide these health benefits.

Research has demonstrated that spending time in nature can significantly reduce levels of cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that a 20-minute "nature break" can lower stress and improve mood by boosting endorphins (Hunter et al., 2019). This effect is crucial in this current era of screen times and deadlines, where chronic stress can lead to a range of health issues, from cardiovascular disease to weakened immune function (American Psychological Association, 2018).

Time outdoors can boost cognitive function. Research from Stanford University reveals that people who walked in nature, as opposed to urban environments, experienced decreased activity in the part of the brain associated with depression, suggesting that nature can improve mental health by decreasing rumination and negative thinking (Bratman et al., 2015).

Ventura Land Trust plays an invaluable role in providing these health benefits through their preserves, including Harmon Canyon and Big Rock Preserve and in the future Mariano Ranco right above the city of Ventura. VLT offers safe, free, and well-maintained spaces for people to connect with nature.

Plus, VLT’s conservation efforts ensure these areas remain thriving ecosystems, supporting local wildlife and biodiversity. By protecting these natural landscapes, Ventura Land Trust enhances the quality of life for today’s residents and ensures that future generations can benefit from access to natural spaces. The organization’s work highlights the importance of environmental stewardship and the lasting impact of outdoor preservation, encouraging a healthy, balanced lifestyle for all.

Investing in local nature preserves like those managed by Ventura Land Trust is crucial for fostering a healthy, thriving community. These investments not only preserve Ventura’s natural landscapes but also enhance public well-being. Investing in nature is an investment in your health.
