Each Sierra Club group leads a wide variety of hikes at diverse times. Levels of experience and fitness required are described. It is always wise to contact the leader of the hike before arriving at the trailhead, especially if you have questions. Prior to the hike, you will be requested to sign a release form.
Conejo, Ventura and Santa Barbara groups list hikes separately on their meetup pages. The Ventura Group lists their hikes and other volunteer actions on their meetup page. Arguello does not have a separate website or calendar. Links to these web pages are listed below.

Prior to the hike, you will be requested to sign a liability release form which will be available at the meeting location. Minors must be accompanied by an adult or have written parental permission giving phone number and authorization for continuing treatment by an MD in case of emergencies. Minors must have a parent sign the Youth Liability Waiver for them. A minor is anyone under the age of 18 years. The outing leader has the discretion not to allow minors.
Basic Backpacking Course 2026
The Basic Backpacking Course for 2026 is scheduled to begin March 2026. This course includes seven weeknight classroom sessions and four outings. Registration will begin November 2025.
The number of students will be limited so that a more personalized experience can be provided. The volunteer leaders will be sharing what they have learned from years of hiking and leading outdoor education. Our goal is to prepare participants to lead their own trips in the local mountains and the California Sierras with comfort and confidence.
