Illustration shows the front of a bookstore or newsstand and several animal characters reading. One newspaper says, "Scientists Find Plastic-Eating Bacteria" and another says, "Best Parasites of 2025." A sign out front says, "Help Wanted Planet Protectors."

Years ago, before I became a parent, I had an idea for a special issue of Sierra dedicated to young readers. The idea came and went. It resurfaced after I had kids of my own and discovered a new way of seeing the world through their eyes. I wanted to share that perspective with our readers.

That vision has finally come to life in Seedlings.

I hope that this special issue is just as inspiring and fun for a nine-year-old as it is for someone who is 90. Because joy matters—to every one of us. Keeping that joy for the world and for one another alive in our hearts matters. It’s why we care so deeply about protecting the planet. It reminds us that even the smallest change, when made with love and care, can have a big impact.

This issue is also a love letter, to my kids and to all who meet the world with wonder, curiosity, and boundless imagination. We are endlessly inspired by your questions, your passion for life, and your love for the planet and all the people and things that inhabit it. You ask, “Why do we need to protect nature?” and “How can we make the planet better?” These are the very questions that shape our future.

The next generation of changemakers, adventurers, and caretakers is already here—you are that generation. So, our call to you is this: Dream big, take action, and never stop believing in your power to heal, protect, and preserve the world we all share.
